Chevrolet has unveiled series of updates for the Corvette for the 2010 model year, with changes affecting the entire lineup, from the base model all the way up to the scorching ZR1 supercar. First and foremost is the introduction of the Grand Sport Model, which returns for 2010 with widebody styling and race-bred suspension. Two new videos show off more of the details and unique features of the Grand Sport, including the new launch control feature - available on all manual-transmission 2010 Corvettes - in action. Not only are the Grand Sport models 0.2 seconds faster from 0-60mph, finishing the sprint in just 4 seconds, they also feature widebody styling and a race-bred suspension. The Grand Sport essentially replaces the Corvette's previous Z51 package and brings a greater degree of handling performance, with wider wheels and tires, revised shocks, new stabilizer bar and spring specifications and new gearing. The LS3 engine’s output has been kept at 430 horsepower and 424 pound-feet of torque, however, an optional two-mode exhaust system boosts output to 436 horsepower and 428 pound-feet. Specific modifications include wider front and rear fenders with unique badging, a Z06-style front splitter and rear spoiler, new brake ducts, unique 18in wheels with 275mm tires up front and 19in units shod with 325mm rubber in the rear, Z06-spec brakes include 355mm rotors with six-piston calipers up front and 340mm rear rotors with four-piston calipers. Pricing for the new model was revealed at the start of June alongside the production of the 1,500,000th Corvette. The Grand Sport Coupe starts from $55,720 including delivery, while the Grand Sport Convertible will set you back $59,530 including delivery. That’s a $6,205 increase over the price of the base 2009 Corvette Coupe and $5,360 over the price of the base Corvette Convertible, respectively, but you do get a lot more kit than the standard cars for your money. All of the Corvette's exterior colors are offered on the Grand Sport and an available ‘Heritage’ package adds iconic front fender hash marks offered in four colors, as well as two-tone seats with Grand Sport embroidery. 2010 Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport Read More
  • GM reveals Corvette ZR1-based C6.R GT2 race car

GM reveals Corvette ZR1-based C6.R GT2 race car The Corvette C6.R GT1 car had its last hurrah at the Long Beach leg of the American Le Mans Series GT1 championship, but today General Motors unveiled the car that will be replacing it - the C6.R GT2, based on the Corvette ZR1.

With the season half over already, Corvette Racing will be using the final five rounds to test and develop the car for next year. The decision to run the car in GT2 is based in part on an upcoming move to a unified GT category in ALMS racing, which will pit the ZR1-based racer against the likes of Aston Martin, Ferrari, Porsche, Viper, Jaguar, BMW, Panoz and Ford.

The Corvette C6.R GT1 car had its last hurrah at the Long Beach leg of the American Le Mans Series GT1 championship, but today General Motors unveiled the car that will be replacing it - the C6.R GT2, based on the Corvette ZR1. "The global movement toward a single GT class will allow us to compete head-to-head with more marketplace competitors while increasing both the production content of the Corvette C6.R race cars and the relevance of racing to our customers. This is a step that positions Corvette for the future of production-based sports car racing worldwide, and a move that is perfectly aligned with GM's marketing and business objectives in racing," said Mark Kent, GM Racing manager. This radical change in GT regulations precipitated the redesign of the Corvette C6.R package. The new car uses the production aluminum hyrdoformed frame complemented with an integrated tubular steel safety cage instead of a ground-up steel frame as in the GT1 car. In addition, ZR1 production-style fenders replace the GT1's wide, louvered units and the rear wing is cut back by 25% in width, while the rest of the car's aero is also reduced or limited to production levels. For the remainder of 2009, the new C6.Rs will get their power from a 470hp 6.0L GM small-block V8 based on the 7.0L LS7.R under the hood of the GT1 version. For next season, the displacement will be cut even further to 5.5L. Both engines run on E85R racing ethanol. The first race for the new GT2 car will be the Acura Sports Car Challenge at Mid-Ohio this coming Saturday, August 8. It will be televised on ABC at 2:30pm Sunday, August 9.Corvette C6.R GT2 race car Read More

SV Motor Company’s new Corvette-based 9 Competizione unveiled The current C6 Corvette platform is proving to be a popular basis for independent coachbuilders, with several firms releasing their own take on the classic sports car over the past 12 months. Corvette-based cars like the Anteros XTM, Innotech C6 and the more recent Bertone Mantide all spring to mind, and now we have the new 9 Competizione from SV Motor Company to add to that list.

The current C6 Corvette platform is proving to be a popular basis for independent coachbuilders, with several firms releasing their own take on the classic sports car over the past 12 months. Corvette-based cars like the Anteros XTM, Innotech C6 and the more recent Bertone Mantide all spring to mind, and now we have the new 9 Competizione from SV Motor Company to add to that list. Under the new sheet metal/carbon-fiber, which shares a striking resemblance to Alfa Romeo’s stunning 8C Competizione, SV has retained the basic C6 Corvette platform but has specifically tailored some of the specifications for use in its new car. Thanks to almost full carbon-fiber bodywork, SV engineers have managed to shed 132 pounds from the Corvette’s kerb weight and give the car a perfect 50/50 front to rear weight distribution. While the powertrain has been left untouched (customers will be able to choose which Corvette model to use), SV engineers have tweaked the brakes and suspension and added Pirelli PZero Rosso ultra performance tires. Lateral acceleration is estimated to be 1.03g and braking from 60-0mph is a claimed 107 feet. Peak power can be boosted, however, if customers select SV’s revised intake and a custom-tuned exhaust option. This includes the ANSA Automotive exhaust system developed by SV for use on the Ferrari Daytona and 599, which on the base LS3-powered Corvette boosts output from 436hp to 450hp and sees the 9 Competizione’s 0-60mph time drop to just 4.0 seconds. The SV 9 Competizione will be limited to 1,000 units at a cost of $99,995 which includes a new, well-equipped donor C6 Corvette purchased through their dealer network. The first showing of the SV 9 Competizione is this Saturday evening in San Francisco. The car will also be on display August 14 at the Concorso Italiano in Pebble Beach. The company says many levels of engine tune will be available, but this package is based on a stroked LS3 that sees displacement lifted from 6.2L to 6.8L. The vehicle is also fitted with a Corsa exhaust and gets full widebody treatment, with broadened suspension and a wider covering. The full bodykit includes exposed carbon fiber details on the exterior, a new front fascia, carbon fiber splitter, extractor hood, front fenders, doors, rocker panels, rear fenders, rear fascia, and a carbon fiber rear diffuser. Special Forgeline VR3P wheels, measuring 19in up front and 20in in the rear provide ample room for the huge 285/30ZR19 front and 335/25ZR20 rear Michelin Pilot Sport 2 Zero Press tires. Stop Tech 15in slotted brake discs and six pistons up front mate with 14in and four piston calipers in the rear for abundant stopping power, lap after lap. The car is painted in BASF liquid silver color (the same used on Mercedes Benz AMG models), while the interior gets GTR-standard embroidered seats and Spinneybeck leather trim details. Like the last version, the Corvette GTR upgrade carries a base price of $34,995, with more custom work available for a premium. All GTRs are custom-built to order and carry documentation and identification to that effect. Importantly, the upgrades are available across the Corvette range, including the base Coupe, new Grand Sport, Z06 and even the ZR1.Specter Werkes GTR Read More
  • Techco supercharger lifts Corvette output to 600hp with only 6psi of boost

Techco supercharger lifts Corvette output to 600hp with only 6psi of boost Californian tuner Techco has just unveiled a new twin-screw supercharger kit that will have owners of C6 Corvettes salivating when they hear the horsepower gains that their cars will be capable of achieving.

The Techco kit is compatible with all C6 Chevrolet Corvettes that have an LS2, LS3 or even the LS7 V8 engine. Featuring a large displacement blower and a dual-stage intercooler system, the 3.0L supercharger can pump close to 50% more air into each cylinder during every intake stroke. This is enough to boost the base Corvette’s 430hp (321kW) to a much more enticing 600hp (448kW) with just 6psi of boost pressure.

This is enough to boost the base Corvette’s 430hp (321kW) to a much more enticing 600hp (448kW) with just 6psi of boost pressure. Torque is similarly improved, with the stock Corvette boasting twisting power of around 424lb-ft (574Nm) without the supercharger kit and around 535lb-ft (725Nm) after the kit has been installed. On top of this, Techco also has boost upgrade kits that will see boost pressure lifted to 10psi and horsepower go up to a heady 650hp (485kW). Priced at $8,500 for the cheapest kit, or $10,000 for the optional polished upgrade, Techco’s packages offer huge improvement in performance without necessarily blowing the bank- although you may want to invest in some larger brakes once the kit is installed. For those who don't own Mustangs, there are similar kits available for all of Chrysler and Dodge 5.7L engines, as well as the 6.1L Challenger/Charger/Magnum/300C/Jeep models. Additionally, there is also a kit available for all 4.6L 3V Ford Mustangs, as well as V8 versions of the new 2010 Chevrolet Camaro. Read More
