Buick Releases Teaser Video For 2011 Regal Sedan

Buick's image re-invention campaign is well underway with the new Enclave, and especially the very solid LaCrosse, but many are still looking forward to Buick's next major product: the 2011 Buick Regal. Just a couple days ago Buick gave us all a taste of what's to come with two official spy shots posted to its Facebook page, and today they've given us a Blair Witch-like preview of the car.

The video doesn't reveal a whole lot--it appears to be the same car leaked from a dealer presentation earlier this month (pictured in the gallery above) right down to the European-style license plate blank. So don't expect the final product to be...

So don't expect the final product to be identical to what you see here. Do expect it to be about 99% the same, however. The spy shots revealed earlier this week also show little except that Buick is working hard to build hype and interest in the car in advance of its production debut. We already know the car will be very similar to the Chinese-market Buick Regal, which is itself based closely on the European Opel Insignia. Previous photos, including one leaked from a presentation of an early prototype to U.S. dealers, depict the car as essentially the Chinese-market car with a slightly reworked front fascia and grille area. The interior is likely to vary somewhat as well, though the Chinese design influence on the new LaCrosse is seen as one of its strong points, so the U.S. car may end up very close to its Chinese-market doppelganger both inside and out. Power for the 2011 Regal is tipped as coming from the 180-horsepower, 2.4-liter four-cylinder due to be added to the LaCrosse later this year, and a likely optional upgrade to the 3.0-liter V-6 also found in the LaCrosse. Whether the Regal might also get the 3.6-liter V-6 from the LaCrosse in a sort of performance variant is still up in the air. When it does arrive--sometime in late 2010--expect it to cost around $24,000 to start in order to leave room for the $27,835 base price of the LaCrosse. Buick Regal Photo Appears On Facebook Sporting Possible U.S.-Market Touches

Just this week Buick confirmed it would be bringing the Regal to the U.S. as its next sedan, and immediately speculation on an Insignia-based Regal much like that currently sold in China began to emerge. Today, a photo of what is purported to be a U.S.-market Buick Regal emerged on Facebook, though the details say it's not the final version.

Side repeater turn indicators and the Euro-sized front-mount license plate holder, for example, indicate that this is still really just a dressed up Insignia. The story behind the car is that it was the vehicle previewed to dealers this week as part of the official confirmation of the Regal program.

Side repeater turn indicators and the Euro-sized front-mount license plate holder, for example, indicate that this is still really just a dressed up Insignia. The story behind the car is that it was the vehicle previewed to dealers this week as part of the official confirmation of the Regal program. The front fascia, foglights and grille treatment are all slightly different from the Chinese-market Buick Regal, however, indicating that this is a fair preview of what the car may look like when it arrives on our shores. Notably absent from the car are the characteristic trio of vents once located on the fenders of Buick vehicles, most recently relocated to the hood on the LaCrosse. As for powerplants, the next Regal is almost certain to get the brand-new 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine also coming to the LaCrosse, while a possible turbocharged 2.0-liter unit and either or both of the 3.0-liter or 3.6-liter V-6s could also be tapped for duty. Read up on the official confirmation for more on what may be planned for the upcoming American version of the Regal. [Facebook via @TheAutoInsider] Read More

Buick Confirms Regal Will Be Next Sedan

The 2010 Buick LaCrosse has been widely hailed as a strong entry into the mid-level luxury segment, besting even Lexus' ES 350 in many respects. But a single car does not make a brand, and so Buick has announced its next vehicle will be the widely-rumored Regal.

The announcement of the rebirth of the Regal nameplate at Buick came during a Buick-GMC dealer business meeting, though no details of the upcoming car's features or design were released. We've been tracking the potential of a Regal for the U.S. for many months now, however, so we can offer some insight into what may be coming.

With the exeunt of Saturn and its models from the national brand stage, Buick is expected to get a re-designed Opel Insignia-based sedan--the car that will be branded the Regal. A version of that car, already branded as the Buick Regal, is currently on sale in China. Like the LaCrosse, the Regal will be based on the Epsilon II front-wheel-drive platform, though the Regal will save costs and position itself just below the LaCrosse by forgoing some of the more premium elements, such as acoustic laminated glass, sound insulation in the underbody and the perimeter engine bay sound seal. The Regal is also expected to come in about four inches shorter in wheelbase than the LaCrosse, and about seven inches shorter in overall length. Powertrain offerings will likely stick to the 180-horsepower, 2.4-liter four-cylinder due to be added to the LaCrosse later this year, with a possible upgrade option in the form of the 3.0-liter V-6 also found in the LaCrosse, leaving the LaCrosse with a further step above the Regal in the form of the 3.6-liter V-6. 2010 Buick LaCrosse Earns IIHS Top Safety Pick

Ever since our first drive of the 2010 Buick LaCrosse, we've been impressed with the car's quality and value, and today's award by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) of a Top Safety Pick to the car therefore comes as no surprise. Buick has built a very solid mid-luxury sedan this time around, and the tests are beginning to show it.

To get a Top Safety Pick from the IIHS, a car must score top marks of "good" in front, side and rear impact tests and feature standard electronic stability control. The 2010 LaCrosse aced the list, beating the 2009 Lexus ES 350 which rated "good" in frontal and side impact tests, but only...

The 2010 Lexus ES 350 hasn't been rated yet. The 2009 Infiniti G37 rated exactly the same as the Lexus. Volvo's S60 earned "good" ratings in front and rear impact, but only scored "acceptable" in side impact. The 2010 Lincoln MKZ, on the other hand, has also earned a Top Safety Pick, putting it and the 2010 LaCrosse in the company of the Mercedes C-Class, Audi A4, BMW 3-Series, Saab 9-3 and Acura TSX and TL in the IIHS's mid-size luxury/near luxury category. Video: Buick Previews Small Premium Car With Avant Concept

Size matters here in the U.S., as much as we may wish it were otherwise. We like our cars, our horsepower figures, our salaries and our meals to be as super-sized as possible. But there's a growing trend to recognize the big value in small things, and Buick is hoping to tap into that in the automotive sector with the Avant.

As cities grow more densely populated and fuel prices rise, owning a large car or SUV is becoming less and less practical. It hasn't changed overnight--and it's not going too--but there's been a definite progression back toward smaller vehicles in the U.S., and Buick's paying attention.

It's drawing on its resources in densely-populated and congested China to help deliver a new small premium platform, and this video reveals some of the concepts flying behind the scenes at Buick: doors that slide instead of swinging open when in tight spots; seating that re-configures itself based on the number of occupants; a unique "micro-pergola" sun roof. All of these features are clearly concept-only for the present, but they illustrate Buick's desire to think outside the box in approaching the small premium segment, something that's going to be a pre-requisite to convincing us free-range North Americans that we need a compact yet still feature-filled and likely pricey city car. To see all of these features and more in action, check out the video below. [GM Lab] Read More

Lutz: Buick To Become 'The New Class Of World Class'

Bob Lutz's return from retirement to the vice chairman of marketing position at General Motors was looked at by many pundits and observers as a mistake--he's a prototypical Detroit fossil. But his attitude contradicts his 77-year age, and the latest ad slogan from Buick, "The new class of world class," reflects his aggressive influence.

Buick's current ad slogan, "Take a look at me now," was first used back in June, but already the new slogan is primed to take its place. Lutz revealed the slogan to Automotive news at an event in Detroit today.

The new 2010 Buick LaCrosse certainly deserves the new slogan, which provides the impetus for the "look" the old slogan implored; the LaCrosse is a solid competitor for the best vehicles in its class. Backing up the LaCrosse with a new range of vehicles that also deserve the "world class" title is where the hard work comes in. Currently, Buick has a batch of new cars in the works, including a possible Epsilon II-based Regal due in 2010, filling in the slot just below the LaCrosse in size and price. Beyond that, an even-smaller Chevrolet Cruze-based (Delta II platform) Buick may also be in the works, as one was recently spotted testing on the Nurburgring. Two new crossovers are also in the works, including a possible small Chevrolet Aveo-sized model. The next several models will be key to Buick's success as a core GM brand, and executives are definitely playing hardball to help move Buick up in the world. Just a few weeks ago the sales launch of the LaCrosse was briefly held up to fix some last-minute quality control issues, and a planned adoption of the Saturn Vue two-mode hybrid in the the Buick lineup--derisively dubbed "Vuick" by the press--was dropped in favor of a new model bearing the efficienct powertrain.
