Report: Bentley Working On Hybrid Powertrain

Bentley may best be known for its hedonistic land yachts that can cost as much as a house, but lately the automaker has become increasingly recognized for its environmental efforts. Bentley has already laid out a three-stage plan to reduce emissions of its fleet by 15%, launch new powertrains that deliver a 40% improvement in fuel economy, and introduce flex-fuel models to help deliver a fleet-wide carbon-dioxide emissions average of 120g/km--all by 2012--but now the team at Crewe are going a step further.

According to a new report, Bentley is already working on a powertrain that will reduce CO2 emissions by 40%--and it’s likely to be a hybrid. It’s set to be launched in 2011, most likely in the next-generation Continental range. The new powertrain could even center on a V-6 powerplant with forced induction. Earlier this year Bentley Chairman and CEO Franz-Josef Paefgen said a “twin-turbo V-6 might be an appropriate engine" when describing future plans for the Continental range, even revealing that downsizing the car to something as small as the Audi A5 platform could be a possibility. Not much else is known apart from the fact that it will also be biofuel capable. Bentley eventually plans to have all of its models biofuel capable by 2012 but so far only the recently revealed Continental Supersports (pictured) meets the challenge. As for alternatives such as hydrogen fuel cells and diesels, Bentley says the lack of popularity of such vehicles in North America means we’re not going to be seeing them any time soon. U.S. Bentley Continental Supersports Won't Do Ethanol--At First

The car touted as Bentley's greenest, fastest and most powerful ever will only hit two out of three of those marks when it makes its U.S. debut next year. The first Bentley to be able to drink ethanol-heavy fuels like E85 as well as gasoline, the flex-fuel ultra-coupe will have to wait until after the first 200 deliveries in the U.S. to come through on its 'green' claims.

The reason for the seemingly arbitrary 200-car mark? That's how long it will take Bentley to get the re-worked flex-fuel V-12 past U.S. homologation testing. To add ethanol capability to the engine, Bentley's engineers had to fit hardened valve seats among other minor...

The reason for the seemingly arbitrary 200-car mark? That's how long it will take Bentley to get the re-worked flex-fuel V-12 past U.S. homologation testing. To add ethanol capability to the engine, Bentley's engineers had to fit hardened valve seats among other minor tweaks, and that means the first Supersports will have to be delivered without the flex-fuel capability. Once the first batch is sold, however, Bentley will bring the fully-ethanol-capable version of the Supersports to the States. The Continental Supersports will still be nothing to sniff at, even without ethanol capability, as its 621-horsepower rating and 243-pound lighter weight than the Continental GT will make it a screamer behind the wheel. Bentley promises 3.7-second 0-60 mph runs and a 204 mph top speed, putting the ultra-luxury coupe fully into supercar territory. • Bentley Considering Convertible Continental Supersports?

    Bentley Considering Convertible Continental Supersports?

The most extreme Bentley could get a convertible version, say company insiders, but the question is still up in the air. It will take some good luck and a strong showing of demand for the hard top version, which goes on sale this month.

Starting at $273,295, the Continental Supersports is no performance bargain, but on the other hand, you do get a whole lot of car--though it's actually 243 pounds lighter than the Continental GT Speed. The 6.0-liter V-12 powerplant is rated at 621 horsepower and can rocket the hulking coupe to 60 mph in just 3.7 seconds--a tenth quicker than the Corvete ZR1 achieves the same feat. Its top speed is equally supercar-like at 204 mph. So throwing a soft top on such a car might not sound like a recipe for success, what with the extra weight penalty it's likely to incur. But Bentley says the GTC Speed's already stiff chassis is already up to the talks of the potent V-12, so the same weight-loss regimen of the coupe at the convertible might just work. The Supersports shaves the weight by fitting carbon ceramic brakes and lighter wheels in addition to lighter interior materials--things that are just as easily done in a convertible. The decision to include the Supersports Convertible to the already large Bentley Continental lineup could also be grounded somewhat in environmental considerations despite its monstrous power output. In addition to being the fastest Bentley ever, the Supersports is also the first to run on both ethanol and gasoline. [Car and Driver] Read More

    Video: 2011 Bentley Mulsanne

With the all-new 2011 Bentley Mulsanne, there's reason to believe that Bentley has a little grudge against its former sibling Rolls-Royce. The Mulsanne had its world debut at the 2009 Pebble Beach Concours back in August, and Bentley makes no veiled references to challenging Rolls-Royce's Phantom with the new sedan. They're saying it outright, calling the Mulsanne the "pinnacle" of luxury cars.

With a 505-horsepower and a massive 752-pound-feet of torque churning out from its twin-turbocharged 6.75-liter V-8 engine, an expected of pricetag of more than $300,000, and leather hide and wood trim as far as the eye can see, we have little reason...

Report: Bentley Mulsanne Coupe And Convertible Planned

Just as the Continental GT has its Flying Spur sedan and GTC convertible variants, Bentley’s upcoming 2011 Mulsanne sedan is expected to spawn its own two-door variants. The legacy started with cars like the Brooklands and Azure Convertible, both of which are in desperate need for a replacement.

The information comes from Bentley executive Dr Ulrich Eichhorn, who hinted at the possibility of a coupe and convertible Mulsanne. Eichhorn explained that the Mulsanne will reset the luxury car benchmark for years to come, so it’s understandable the company has such ambitious plans for the platform.

“With this car, we assessed the performance, craftsmanship and refinement of the Arnage--and enhanced it in every way. We have produced a car of the highest possible quality,” Eichhorn claimed. If a two door Mulsanne tickles your fancy, don’t hold your breath as the coupe and convertible variants are still several years away from launch. Power in the new coupe and convertible will almost certainly match that of the Mulsanne, which means a twin-turbocharged 6.75-liter V-8 engine with a generous 505 horsepower and 752 pound-feet of torque on tap. Looks like the Rolls-Royce Phantom Coupe and Drophead will soon have some competition. The story doesn't end there as Rolls-Royce is also expected to launch new coupe and convertible variants of the new 2010 Ghost sedan, which you can read about here. [AutoExpress] Read More
