Hot on the heels of the ActiveHybrid X6 revealed yesterday, BMW has announced the production version of the all-new ActiveHybrid 7 sedan, which will also premiere at next month’s Frankfurt Auto Show. Combining twin-turbocharging and direct-injection technologies with a 3-phase synchronous electric motor powered by lithium-ion batteries, the ActiveHybrid 7 manages to churn out 455 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque and sends this all through a smooth-shifting 8-speed automatic transmission. The end result is a full-size luxury sedan that is capable of accelerating from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.8 seconds, while delivering fuel economy approximately 15% better than the similarly powerful 750i. Some of the other advanced fuel-saving measures include an engine stop-start system and electronically-powered auxiliary systems. Additionally, BMW’s ActiveHybrid technology uses energy that would be normally converted into heat through the brakes, and therefore wasted in conventional cars. The ActiveHybrid 7 features an enhanced version of the automaker’s Brake Energy Regeneration system already used in some current BMW models running on a combustion engine alone. In this case the integrated electric motor acts as a generator when coasting or applying the brakes, in order to feed electric power into the battery. Brake Energy Regeneration converts some of the vehicle’s kinetic energy into electric power for the on-board network whenever the driver lifts off the accelerator or applies the brakes. On acceleration, electricity is fed back into the on-board network from the lithium-ion battery. This sequence relieves the combustion engine from the task of converting some of its fuel energy into electric current, and thus enables the engine to provide more power directly to the rear wheels. The result is better acceleration even than the 750i, despite the fact that the additional power is obtained in a way that does not require additional consumption of fuel. Under the front hood is the regular 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 from the 750i, which produces a peak output of 440 horsepower and 475 pound-feet of torque and is matched with a three-phase synchronous electric motor. The motor is positioned between the engine and the torque converter, and is connected to the crankshaft. Shaped like a disc, it weighs 50.7 pounds. The motor generates boost of approximately 20 horsepower and peak torque of 155 pound-fee. When operating as a generator in Brake Energy Regeneration, the electric motor produces approximately 27 horsepower of brake force. As mentioned, the electric motor in the ActiveHybrid 7 is powered by lithium-ion batteries. Importantly, the car gives up almost no luggage capacity to its conventional siblings (750i and 750Li), because the 120-volt battery is small enough to be mounted underneath the trunk floor. The useful energy provided by the battery is 400 watt-hours. The battery itself is comprised of 35 cells and an integrated control unit which continuously analyzes the charge level and ensures appropriate dependability under all conditions. Special displays are included in the instrument cluster and the central display so you will know just how much fuel you are actually saving. To set it apart from the regular 7-Series and to ensure onlookers know owners are slightly environmentally concerned, the ActiveHybrid 7 is distinguished by custom aerodynamically-tuned 19-inch alloy wheels, unique badging, and a special ‘Bluewater’ metallic paint scheme. The new ActiveHybrid 7 will reach America shores in Spring in next year and both standard and long-wheelbase versions will be offered. Official EPA ratings will be available closer to the U.S. market launch. Read More

The beefed up limo comes in two different flavors, with the V8 750Li and V12 760Li on offer, and both are the first models in the world to be certified to BRV 2009 as well as meeting the requirements of the new ballistic protection level VR7 and VR9 standards. Based on the regular 7-Series luxury sedan, the High Security models are fitted with specific chassis components that are adapted to the increase in weight due to their armor plating. Hence, reinforced suspension, dampers and suspension strut top mountings are part of the model-specific component range. Reinforced vehicle-specific armor plating made from special steel as well as newly developed safety glazing protects the passenger compartment in particular from attacks. The passenger compartment is protected by armor plating of the doors, the roof, the pillars, the front footwell and the separation wall between passenger and luggage compartments. The sedans’ undercarriage is also armored by special plating that was developed with a particular focus on maximum explosion protection. Another new development is the sedans’ 2.4 inch safety glazing. Both models have an electronically limited top speed of 130 mph, while the 750Li is capable of accelerating from rest to 62 mph in 7.9 seconds and the 760Li in as little as 6.2 seconds. Just like the range of comfort features, the security package for the 7-Series High Security model can be fully optioned. An intercom system with concealed microphones and speakers allows communication with people outside of the vehicle without the need to open doors or windows. Additional safety options include an assault alarm, fire extinguishing system with temperature sensor for extinguishing fires in the engine compartment and below the vehicle as well as irritant gas sensors for protecting passengers from gas attacks. If the interior protection system is triggered by excess gas levels, all windows are closed automatically, the central locking system is activated, the fresh air valves are closed and the ventilation system is shut off. BMW also offers special options for authorities, governments and embassies. The package provides a range of special features such as flag holders, arrangements for radio installations right through to a gun case with compartments for two machine guns in the center console. Also included is an external beacon with a roof installation system and integrated LED flashing lights for the front grille. All Security models are built completely in-house at BMW and are available directly through the automaker’s dealerships. The vehicles are targeted primarily at buyers concerned about carjacking and kidnapping, especially in parts of Latin America, South-East Asia, Africa and the Middle-East. In order to accommodate this exclusive circle of customers, BMW provides discreet consultancy and personalized sales and service support all over the world. Furthermore, the security models are serviced by certified special garages only. Access to the vehicles is restricted to very few selected and specially trained personnel.2010 BMW 7-series2010 BMW 7-Series High Security Read More

Earlier this year we brought you news of BMW's entry into the hybrid market, with the suspected debut of a 7-Series equipped with the automaker’s ActiveHybrid system coming at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Now, BMW has officially confirmed the news, and also revealed that the 2007 ActiveHybrid X6 concept we saw a couple of years ago will also be appearing in production form alongside the 7-Series Hybrid. BMW has previously claimed that the new mild hybrid system will be able to improve fuel economy by around 15%, and it is expected that the hybrid system will initially be mated to a 4.4L V8 model for the 7-Series. That engine features around 400hp by itself, but a small 20hp electric motor is expected to be added to improve efficiency in low speed situations. While it's not yet certain whether the same hybrid features, such as regenerative braking, engine stop-start technology and optimized aerodynamics seen on the earlier 7-series ActiveHybrid concept, will make it to production, it is expected that BMW will at least incorporate some of these features in marketing the car. The Frankfurt Motor Show will also be the platform for other BMW debuts for both the BMW and Mini brands. BMW will be showing off a new environmentally-friendly sustainable sports car concept, while Mini is expected to show a near-production ready version of a new two-seater roadster model for the brand. • BMW M Division boss: No M7 in the works

BMW M Division boss: No M7 in the works Fresh off our experience with BMW's X6 M and discussions of future products with the M Division chief Dr Kay Segler, more news about the future of the M brand has emerged. Once again it's Segler spreading the news, but this time it's not so good: there is no M7 in the works.

Instead, the twin-turbo V12 760i will take the top billing for the 7-series powertrains, and when outfitted with the M-Sport package, will comprise the highest-performance 7 available.

While it's always a sad thing to hear a high-performance variant has met the budgetary axe, it's not so sad in this case, as Segler pointed out to Automotive News. "We've looked at that... Fresh off our experience with BMW's X6 M and discussions of future products with the M Division chief Dr Kay Segler, more news about the future of the M brand has emerged. "We've looked at that and decided not to do it. The 760 with AWD is a very strong offer. The M sales would be too small for our total investment," Segler said of the M7. With a 6.0L, 536hp twin-turbo V12 under the hood, Segler has a point. Piped through BMW's AWD system, that power is capable of careening the big sedan to 62mph in under 4.6 seconds while delivering a European cycle rating of 18mpg US. Those figures match or beat the 555hp X6 M's specifications, so in effect, the regular BMW has simply grown so capable as to usurp the need for an M-variant. There are also those that would argue the X6 M is no true M-car at all. And while handling and transitional performance may not be quite up to M-snuff, the car's active damping control and roll stabilization programs do give a competent balance between the ride the average limousine sedan buyer is looking for at the on-road poise necessary for a car to be called an Ultimate Driving Machine. Of course, we'll have to wait until we get the chance to test the 760i ourselves to deliver a final verdict on the wisdom of skipping the M7.BMW 760i and long-wheelbase 760Li2010 BMW 7-series M Sport Package Read More

Following its successful introduction into the market last year, the BMW 7-series is further expanding its position in 2010 with the launch of several new models and accessories. In addition to the new M Sport Package, which is available for all models in the 7-series range, both normal and extended wheelbase, the 2010 BMW 7-seires also gets optional xDrive AWD as well as a new 740d. The BMW 740d, to be introduced in the third of the year in select markets, will for the first time feature a new straight-six diesel engine with BMW’s TwinPower direct-injection and twin-turbocharging technologies. The engine displaces 3.0L and produces a peak output of 306hp (225kW) and 442lb-ft (600Nm) of torque maintained consistently between 1,500 and 2,500 rpm. This enough to accelerate the car from a standstill to 100km/h in 6.3 seconds and see it easily reach its electronically limited top speed of 250km/h. Despite the respectable performance, average fuel economy comes in at 34mpg (6.9L/100km) with CO2 emissions down around the 181g/km mark. The existing 730d diesel model also gets BMW’s new BluePerformance exhaust particulate filtering system for 2010. As a result, the exhaust management reduces nitric oxides to the European emissions standard not coming into force until the introduction of EU6 in the year 2014. Fuel economy remains at 34.6mpg (6.8L/100km), while CO2 emissions are reduced to 178g/km. BMW’s intelligent xDrive AWD will also be introduced in the 7 Series for the first time in the 2010 model year. It will initially be available for the 750i and 750Li models but is expected to filter across to other models over the course of the year. Through a power divider with an electronically controlled multiple-plate clutch, xDrive adjusts the amount of torque going to either axle depending on traction levels of all four wheels. In the process the operation of xDrive is also based on the steering angle pre-determined by the driver. While, when driving smoothly in a straight line, the front-to-rear power split is 40:60, up to 80% of the drive power goes to the rear axle in a bend. Then, when leaving the bend, the distribution of drive power returns to normal in the interest of maximum traction when accelerating again in a straight line.2010 BMW 7-series M Sport Package2010 BMW 7-series Read More
