Muscle car wars heat up as Camaro outsells Mustang in June

December 31st, 1969 Ford or Chevy. Camaro or Mustang. Bud or Coors. These are just a few of the great debates of our time, and while none are likely to find a final answer anytime soon, Camaro enthusiasts just got some more ammunition for their position, with the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro outselling the 2010 Ford Mustang in monthly sales for the first time since 1993. The sales tally for June was 9,320 for the Camaro and 7,362 for the Mustang, reports Automotive News. To be fair, the Mustang has been on sale for several months more than the Camaro, so the early demand surge may taper off as time goes on. On the other hand, GM sold 14,000 Camaros before the car ever went on sale, so what we're seeing now could just be the mainstream market's desire for a good-looking American coupe. With the powerhouse Transformers 2 movie behind it, Camaro sales are definitely strong for the present, anyway. Though the Camaro managed to top the Mustang for June's sales, it will remain to be seen if it can pull off a full-year win. The last time the Camaro managed that feat was way back in 1985. With the Camaro selling well over sticker price and early results for June hinting that the market may be slowly headed back out of its tailspin, GM may yet have what it takes to take away Ford's muscle car sales title, so stay tuned for the next chapter in the ever-vicious muscle car war.2010 Chevrolet Camaro Official Photos2010 Ford Mustang

  1. flashpan sales. give it another month or two. mustangs sell, always have, and always will. the novelty of the camaro will drop. it is a great looking car now but the design will not age well.

people will get bored of it.

everyone is saying the new mustang is still better than the camaro and the challenger even with less power. its just a more fun car.

I just read the article in Car and Driver that seemed to say the same thing. Even with it's "archaic" live axle it's just so much better to drive. I think the wieght has a lot to do with it, but the Mustang has had 5 years now to work out all the bugs and kinks. Now, if they really do plan on upping the basic GT to 400hp, then all bets are off... :)

  3. It looks good, but I would wait for the Mustang with the upcoming 5 liter V8 or even the twin turbo V6.

  4. It's not even about the design, both cars are comparable in that regard, neither one is exactly beautiful.

It's just that the Camaro is a dead car, with good reason, having been brought back to life only because the people at GM are utterly devoided of any imagination or new ideas. There's going to be a brief surge in sales of the Camaro and then, like all other brilliant GM ideas, it'll fade into obscurity. The Mustang wins if only by virtue of never having gone out of production.

Plus, really, would you want to be seen in a car that can be connected with Shia Lefag?

  5. Let's remember, the Stang has been continually produced for 45 years. The Camaro never outsold the Mustang before, so one month doesn't make a winner. It was dropped for lack of sales before and it will happen again. I've had many GM products and never a good one. The only cars that were good are my Fords & Mopars. Yes, the Camaro looks good, but with my GM track record, I would never consider it.

  6. ill take the camaro and challenger way before the 2010 mustang.. the new mustang is ugly as **** and round.. prefer the one before.

prefer the look of the camaro and challenger
