BMW releases full details for new X1 SUV

The next couple of years will be very busy for BMW as it launches a handful of new models including new versions of current top sellers and some models we’ve never seen before. The new X1 falls into the latter category and will take the carmaker into the compact SUV market currently dominated by the likes of the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V.
The X1 has been conceived with the flexibility to offer traditional RWD and xDrive AWD configurations, as well as a wide variety of petrol and diesel powertrain choices. It will debut in Europe this fall with a choice of four engines - one petrol and three diesels - and will be available in both RWD and AWD. The most efficient of the range, the RWD sDrive18d achieves fuel economy of up to 45.2mpg (5.2L/100km) while still being capable of reaching speeds of up to 124mph.
It was also revealed today that the X1 will go on sale in the U.S. in 2011, likely with two new petrol engines.
Every X1 will also be available with BMW’s EfficientDynamics technology helping to improve fuel economy and reduce emissions. These will include brake energy regeneration, engine stop-start technology and a gearshift point indicator.
The initial model range will include the 258hp (190kW) and 228lb-ft (310Nm) of torque xDrive28i 3.0L petrol model, which can accelerate from 0-62mph in 6.8 seconds and reach a top speed of 127mph while returning fuel economy of 25mpg (9.4L/100km). This is followed by a 204hp (150kW) and 295lb-ft (400Nm) of torque xDrive23d, a 177hp (130kW) and 258lb-ft (350Nm) of torque xDrive20d and sDrive20d, and finally a 143hp (105kW) and 236lb-ft (320Nm) of torque xDrive18d and sDrive18d.
BMW family traits can also be found in the styling of the front and rear lights, which resemble the recently revealed 5-series GT and the 7-series sedan, respectively. The shots also confirm that BMW designers have stuck closely to the lines of the Concept X1 showcased at last year’s Paris Motor Show.
Three full-sized seats in an elevated position at the rear offer generous space and the backrest is adjustable for angle and folds down in a 40/20/20 split. Luggage compartment capacity may be increased from 420 litres/14.7 cu ft to a maximum of 1,350 litres/47.3 cu ft. An electrically operated Panorama glass roof is available as an option.
Production volume is expected to top the 100,000 mark and will take place at a BMW plant in Leipzig. The X1 will be priced higher than the 1-series, likely starting close to the $30,000 mark, and will be revealed for the first time in the metal at September’s Frankfurt Motor Show.2010 BMW X1 SUV

Regardless of size Wizard is right. This is just the latest mongo-car from the once hallowed brand from Bavaria.
Will it sell? Hopefully not. BUt those that sell will just make it easier for the rest of us to tell who the TOOLS are.

LIke people who always comment negatively on everything
I can understand BMW's idea of saturating the market with a vehicle for everyone's needs, but this vehicle looks odd and I cannot find where it's going to fit in...
If they're looking to suit urban professionals, wouldn't they focus on the X3? The X1 to me looks almost go-kart-ish...and from the price of things, it'll probably skyrocket from $30,000 to upwards of $40-grand with only a few options available. I think BMW should've stuck with the X3 and kept the small SUV suited only it's MINI-brand.
Look at the X6...the thing looks bald on the top from it's lack of roof-racks...and I can tell you, I live in Northern Jersey and it's rare to see people driving an X6...
Hell, it's the first time seeing the X1, so I think it's styling will slowly grow on me...

They should have made it look more coupe like such as the X6 and named it X2. Would have made more sense that way. With this boxy shape and being too close to X3 in size, renders it as pointless.
This is one BMW that I actually really like and if I had the money, would definitely be on my wish lists'.
It's just the right size for an SUV, good choice of engines and very well made cabin ( since the new 7 series came-out every BMW that came after had really properly appointed interiors, dare I say up to benchmark Audi standards )
Looks almost identical to the X3. Again, the Motoren Werkes succeeds in out-nicheing everybody else. Wait for them to stick the tt six from the 135i in it and call it the "X1M". Jeesh, can't even keep track of all the BMW models and variants and trim levels as it is, pretty soon their sales brochure is going to look like a phone book.

Although i apose BMW getting cheaper and cheaper they are doing so and in a very trendy fashion.
I think the interior of this X1 is superb compared to most cars.
The design lines in the interior-(doors, air con vents etc) are fantastic and flow. The exterior.....I like the shape of the car and the front is nice. Not a fan of the rear lights.
We are judging the car as a BMW and although we are right to do so we need to keep in mind that it is cheap, its an entry level toyota-honda competitor and in my mind a great car.
P.S- I dont like what BMW is doing here, id rather more premium cars keeping with the prestige of the brand rather then X1's......

Doubt the price will be that low in say the U.S., the 1 series is not cheap and even has price overlap with the 3 series
There's something odd about the hood and windshield area, something seems off on the proportions or something. It feels disjointed, like they took chunks of different cars and glued them together.
The world really needs another SUV.
I love mini SUV, I bealive BMW is expanding way to fast, but making great cars available.
As bad as this car seems it works.
There are always going to be the M models, the 330i, the 5series, 6 and 7 that are cars people are really want from BMW. There's the 135i coupe which is the best small coupe on the planet it eats the Scirroco and TT for breakfast (but its a bit too expensive considering the 3 series pricing)
This car will have limited development costs and will probably be made to order bar the ones they force dealerships to buy and it will be based on existing platforms, using existing technology and is just to milk consumers who want this sort of thing.
This doesn't degrade the brand, when you consider the 3series (probably in 318i or 320d form) outsells the Mondeo!
It's moves like this, that means they can steal Rav4 customers and get brand loyalty from the hairdresser who wants a BMW 4X4 can't afford a bigun so she gets this and moves on to an X5 when shes making some more money - or a Z4.

im used to having an extra foot so its common place for me :D
you misunderstand what im attempting to portray. This car the X1, the X3 and the X5 are so similar in size that they dont make sense. I would get the X5 in every single case. The price difference between the 6 cylinder fully loaded X3 and the 6 cylinder X5 is actually a negative amount. It is cheaper to get an X5 than an X3. This will be the same for the fully loaded X1. the only reason people will believe it is cheap is because it will have no extras. it will be bare bones. To spec it up it will be pushing itself past the base model X3.
Hence my comment of market saturation and another meaningless car from a once respected automotive company.
