December 31st, 1969 Mercedes-Benz has some major changes in store for its product line over the coming years, with several key models receiving facelifts and complete name changes. We have already seen this with the new 2010 E-Class Coupe, which has replaced the CLK, and soon we will see the CL name phased out with the introduction of a facelifted model next year. The updated car will come in for the 2011 model year and go by the new name of S-Class Coupe. The current C216 CL was first introduced at the end of 2006 but prototypes for the facelifted version have been spotted testing in Germany as early as August last year. Earlier this year we saw images of the high-performance AMG model but these latest shots depict the standard model. New details include a more upright grille highlighted with a single chrome bar, as well the new headlight design and LED accents. In the rear we can clearly see full LED rear lights, a new bumper design and different shape exhaust tips. Other changes planned include new indicators in the side mirrors. Mercedes-Benz engineera are unlikely to change the CL’s powertrain lineup for the new S-Class Coupe, which means that the current assortment of V-8 and V-12 engines should remain. There could, however, be a number of modifications to the exhaust filtering systems to help improve emissions, as well as the introduction of engine stop-start and direct-injection technologies.

Call me crazy, yet I think the days of the S Class, 7 Series and even the venerable A8 are over. As a former owner of the 740i, and Two A8's I can tell that the world is shifting, the tectonic plates have begun to move and such cars are little more than status symbols. I'm guilty of it, no question, yet the leg room differential in an A8 to A6 is somewhat negligible. Look for these models to disappear, and become a thing of the past.

Though the Cl coupe resides on the s class chassis, I still dnt thynk that its appropriate to change the name to s coupe as the did with the e class... The Cl was in a league of its own I i feel it should remain that way with out the name change...merc might as well call the maybach 57 and 62 the s class ultra luxury and s class presidential since they share the same chassis(re-worked of course)!!

Don't be ridiculous. Just because the economy is down doesn't mean all the bigwig sedans are going to disappear. This isn't the first recession to ever hit,it happens every several years. The second this one ends, the rich will start getting richer and these cars will sell just like they always have.

No, the 6 series is the coupe to the 5 series

not really it is inbetween them both, hence it being a series rather than a 5 series coupe or a 7 series coupe

a 7series specific coupe could damage 6 series sales

NND you are right that the 6-series is based on the 5-series chassis but it has had significant changes made to the body and has a more luxurious interior. I would agree with danDAN that it is between the 5 and the 7.

I am not a fan of these updating processes. Sometimes it works and most times it just make it worse. I am so lost with Mercedes naming their models that I don't even know which model I am referring to that says it worked out well for me. That baby SL, is it CLK SLK SLR CLR? Damn confusing! So, yes, that baby SL worked out great WHILE, the new SL with that weird looking headlamps, IMO is a sad and unneccessary update that don't do it justice!

S-Class Couple? Now, that is more like it!!! Still, I like the design as it was before all these updating. If I have the cash in hand now, I am get the first version.

one of my mates has the latest cl coupe and i have to think theres alot better coupes, and cars in general to spend AU$300,000 on! and i think he secretly agrees.... it may have the gadgets and some huge engines... but the engines are quite boring and id much rather stunning looks (aston martin etc) rather than a few cool (useles) gadgets.

I just don't like the look of anything coming from Mercedes right now. The previous E-class was good, as was the CLK, and the previous SL, before they mucked up the headlights.
But now, the E class looks Japanese, as does this car, the S-class looks like a blowtorch melted the back end, which was copied from the even more hideous 7 series (which they have fixed on the back end at least). Why is everything so damn droopy with them?

Sorry Pal, don't think you have a good point there. Sure the A6 is only a bit smaller than the A8. But the A5 is a bit smaller than the A6 and the A4 is a bit smaller than the A5. And the A3, the A2, the A1...

And you can see this ludicrous situation across all three of the German marques.

But just by virtue of being there first the A8 has more of a reason to exist than the A5, whatever the aesthetic reasons the latter one offers.

The current trend, however, is to create more niche cars, whether the motoring public wants them or not.

Looks plain...is it just me? Or does the front almost look as identical, in a way, to the new E-class coupe..just a little different headlights.
