GM logs 10,000 advance orders for new Camaro


December 31st, 1969 The new Camaro looks poised to take a favored position in the new muscle car wars with its strong entry-level V6 offering and over-the-top SS power, and buyers are already agreeing - to the tune of 10,000 pre-orders, according to General Motors. The first cars ordered were primarily SS models with the potent V8, but later comers have taken healthily to the V6 to balance out the pre-order mix. All 10,000 of those cars will doubtless be built, but they may be delayed if a solution to a production stumbling block isn't found quickly. Just a few days ago General Motors instituted a lawsuit against key Camaro supplier Cadence Innovation because Cadence's bankruptcy threatened to disrupt the Camaro's production. The suit is for the return of equipment used to manufacture parts for the Camaro; GM's customary practice is to turn over such tooling once a contract for production is reached. Now that Cadence is in bankruptcy, however, it can't produce the parts and it's also unwilling to return the tooling in the hopes that it may yet re-organize and fulfill the contract. The time frame for delivery is short - fewer than two weeks, according to GM, before the car will be delayed. Whatever the long-term outcome of the suit, the problem of delays may send some of those preorders running to the competition - the 2010 Ford Mustang or Dodge Challenger. On the other hand, pre-orders for the car are likely made in large part by brand loyalists and fans that will not switch allegiance for the sake of instant gratification.   1. Man, I hope they get the equipment back or do whatever it takes to get production started...I really would like to get my hands on a V6 'maro. As much power as the Mustang GT, more efficient, and far better looking, imo.

    Plus when you get tired of it you could always drop a LS9 crate engine in there....:D

  2. 10,000 sight unseen orders on a car that will list from 25-40k... not bad... GM just made a quarter billion dollars.

  3. Fine, let them pay the government loan back with the money people were foolish enough to front for a product they have yet to drive. Quickly, please. Before more suppliers goes bankrupt and/or the car fails to meet expectations for refinement, quality, etc.

    Regarding the hype: I hope GM gets back on track, albeit not with my money, but remember the rush for Ford's last Thunderbird or Chrysler's PT Cruiser? How long did that last before the snickering among other drivers started?

    Beware retro-inspired fads, even ones based on a legacy nameplate. And let's not even think about what would happen to this car if gas prices shoot back up, which is OPEC's clearly stated intention.

  6. Just one question, does this car have a dual clutch transmission?

    Wait, don't answer, the truth is, IT DOES NOT.

    So they can stuff their one generation behind transmissions up their ass.

    Bankruptcy for these idiots is the best thing, put them out of their idiotic misery.
