Audi says the V10-powered R8 wouldn’t make it here until the second half of 2010 if given the green light for U.S. sale
Enlarge PhotoBefore these arrive, however, Audi will start selling the R8 with a second engine option. Joining the current 420hp (313kW) and 317lb-ft (430Nm) 4.2L V8 version is the new V10 model powered by the naturally-aspirated 5.2L engine found in the S6. Making its world debut at last month’s Detroit Auto Show, the new V10 R8 delivers 525hp (386kW) and 391lb-ft (530Nm) of torque and is capable of sprinting from 0-62mph (100km/h) in just 3.9 seconds and reaching a top speed of 196mph (316km/h).
Unfortunately, the car may not make it to the U.S. anytime soon. Speaking with Edmunds, Audi spokesman Christian Bokich said the 5.2 FSI “isn't yet fully confirmed” for the U.S. and that its arrival wouldn’t be until the second half of 2010 at the earliest. The car goes on sale in Europe in the first half of this year.
If it does make it here before the late 2010 date, there is the chance that the current V8 model may eventually be phased out due to the expected lower demand.
