Spy shots: Mercedes Benz E-Class Cabrio takes to the 'Ring
December 31st, 1969
The previous Mercedes Benz CLK is something of an enigma - built around the C-Class platform, styled like the E-Class, and priced in between the two, the car sits in its own unique segment and has no direct competition from its rivals. Its sales history has been a strong success, especially in the U.S., but the car is set to meet its demise with the arrival of the new E-Class Coupe in a couple of months and the Cabrio in the middle of next year.
Latest spy shots show a prototype for the Cabrio model testing at Germany's Nurburgring, and as expected it draws heavily from the recent ConceptFASCINATION. The car will be about 10cm longer than the CLK Cabrio that it replaces and it sticks with a traditional folding soft top.
The engine lineup should mirror the Coupe, which means four, six and eight-cylinder units with outputs from 150kW/200hp to 285kW/382hp - the top end model being the E500/550.
The decision to move the CLK to the E-Class platform will allow Mercedes to introduce a new entry-level coupe and convertible based on the C-Class, finally providing the carmaker with a direct competitor to BMW’s popular 3-series two-door models. You can see a preview of such a car in our previous story by clicking here.
The story doesn’t end there, however, as Mercedes is also expected to launch a new ‘shooting brake’ model based on the ConceptFASCINATION, although no official details about its release have been mentioned.2011 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Cabrio spy shots2010 Mercedes-Benz E-class Coupe Official

i hate those rims. Yes they are suposed to look like in inside of a jet engine but they scream of tackiness to me !
Now the question for folding hardtops I always have is: Will the trunk space be as lamely, ridiculously pathetic as the 3 series with the top down?
your right gus, its a crap compromise either a big boot and more ugly looks or no trunk with great looks.. the jaguar xk convertible is the only good looking car with a trunk and looks beautiful but the handling is compromised because of it =[. but this merc looks great! im not a fan of the sedan but the coupe and this convertible looks beautiful
The rims definitely have to go...
And I don't imagine that trunk space is a great concern of the people that are going to be buying this car. It's main purpose will be to show them off.
Not bad, but why call it the E-class I heard it is based closer to the C
I agree with NoNeDenton,
How is a 2 door convertible with almost nonexistent back seats considered an E Class? E just like S are big sedans comfortable for everyone in them. This looks like it would be torture to everyone except the driver.
Oh and as everyone said, the rims look awful on this car. Not to say the rims themselves are bad, but they just don't fit...
think 6 series with this
Ofourse the 6 series wins! what does this car have better then a 6 series? My mum had the current CLK which was a lemon(roof) so she went and bought the 650 convertible and its just so so so much better! Its better looking, more space, more power, and just a cooler looking car. And its boot is huge compared to the CLK. Theirs a reason the CLK starts from AUD:90,000 and the 6AUD:245,000.
And i hate hard tops on large cars it doesnt have a natural flow. On rodsters its great.
Eg, 3series(N) SL(Y)
and the clk/e class rodster is aimed more towards the 3series.
reply to John b :
this deffinately isn't competing with the 3 series..this is competing with the 6 series
c class - 3 series
e class - 5 series
the 6 series is essentially a 5 series coupé plus some, the e class coupé will be pitted against the 6 allowing MB to release a cheaper coupé and convertible to compete on price and size better with the 3 series
I disagree, the 6 series is more in line with the SL.
As for those new pictures, it looks like a soft top to me?
I hope it's a soft top, the trunks on a folding hardtop are jokes.
I heard the same as Gus, the 6 is an SL competitor
The SL is a roadster. The 6 Series is a four-seat cabriolet. Ok, they are more or less about as expensive. But now that Mercedes added the E Class coupé and cabrio, it'll be 6 Series' main rival and the Sl will remain (Germeny-speaking) alone.
But as far as size and cost go, the SL and the 6 are a match.
They should make a 5 series coupe/convertible and make the 6 a 2 seater performance car...
So MB is capable of making an interior that looks like this... which just makes the one on the S class all the more unforgievable.
Well, the new pics look better, but I'm still not a fan of sagging back ends with the drooping tail lights. I'm sure it will be a great car, though...

spoken like someone who has never had any seat time in an S-Class...

Don't mind Hector, he never says anything positive
Um, the 6 is squarely set against the CL class... despite some massive price differences. The 6 is pretty unique, much like the CLK used to be, but this will probably be competing directly with it (as the affordable option)...
The inside of this, the roadsters and the S are the only decent MB interiors at the moment...
