While 59 seconds may be fast, modern F1 cars can complete the course in around 40 seconds
Enlarge PhotoCalled the Scuderia Spider 16M, the car was launched today as part of Ferrari’s celebrations for its 16th F1 Constructor's title. Ferrari is already boasting that the new Scuderia Spider is faster around the Fiorano circuit than any previous open-top Prancing Horse, and has also revealed that just 499 examples will be produced.
The Scuderia Spider 16M is available in a choice of two new colour schemes: the standard version is black with grey trim, while a tricolour livery is also available as part of the Carrozzeria Scaglietti Personalisation Programme. The new car also sports a special plaque on its rear grille commemorating Ferrari's 16th Constructor's World title. The interior is also underscored by the silver "limited series" plaque just above the air vents at the center of the dashboard. Other exclusive features include a roll-bar with a carbon-fiber outer shell and an audio system that can be combined with the removable customised Ferrari iPod Touch 16GB media player.
This model has a dry weight of 1340kg (80kg lighter than the F430 Spider). The kerb weight is a claimed 1440kg. This, combined with the 510hp (375kW) provided by its V8 engine and a power-to-weight ratio of 2.6kg/hp, means that it delivers a blistering 0-100km/h acceleration time of just 3.7 seconds and a top speed of 315km/h.
Like the hard-top model, the Scuderia Spider 16M features a naturally aspirated 4.3L V8 engine delivering peak power of 510hp (375kW) at 8,500rpm and peak torque of 346lb-ft (470Nm) at 5,250rpm. Drive is sent to the rear wheels via a six-speed Reverse F1 gearbox mated to a dry clutch and an electronic differential with F1-Trac.
Expect to pay more than the $277,000 base price of the hard-top - that is if you can get your hands on one in the first place.

Meet the top commenters on the Leaderboard80kg less? and a ferrari customized ipod touch, for how much? Oo that rhymes!
With a design like this Ferrari can come out alive of this recession, only if they ax every other design and offer this car with a V-12.
I prefer the coupe but this is great
head turner on every occasion. ferrari rules the road
Edward, how on Earth couldn't they come out of this recession? If I'm not mistaken, there's still at least a year-long waiting list for every single model Ferrari makes. They've got all the demand they could ever want, and if they wanted more customers they would simply have to build more cars. No matter how many they build, they'd sell all of them and then some. That was such a silly statement.
I think they could of fit a V-10, F1 gearbox is enough, and if they put a V-8 instead of V-10 they should of made it a 2 by 2 hard top and make it fit in front of the engine and made the car longer.
How many of you actually know what it feels like to sit inside an accelerating Ferrari? My guess is only a few. You guys are talking about recessions, these cars have nothing to do with recessions. The only thing serious buyers should be considering is Scuderia's are under $200 K.
