Autonet Mobile and Delphi team up to provide wireless internet for cars

Automotive parts supplier Delphi Corporation and wireless internet company Autonet Mobile announced an agreement this week to market and develop Internet-connectivity technology products for a number of automobile manufacturers. The two companies are field testing new telematics and in-car entertainment products using Internet-based media services designed on the Autonet Mobile network architecture.

The Autonet Mobile system works by turning vehicles into secure mobile WiFi hot spots, and according to the two companies the system has been optimized for use in cars. Autonet Mobile’s patent-pending TRU Technology helps to eliminate the "dropped call" syndrome, allowing vehicle passengers to stay connected to the Internet with any WiFi device while on the road.

Autonet Mobile is the same company slated to provide Chrysler's 'uconnect' web system as a dealer-installed Mopar Accessory, and the company also offers an after-market router accessory that we reported on earlier.

Meanwhile, Ford has been showing off its own mobile internet technology in its upcoming Flex, with customized versions featuring LIIV mobile internet systems. BMW is also keen to join the mobile internet bandwagon with its ConnectedDrive system, which should see European release by the end of this year.
