Saab 9-4X revealed ahead of L.A. Auto Show debut

Earlier this week we saw the covers come off a new design study from Saab based around the previous 9X BioHybrid concept car, however there’s another more important model the Swedish carmaker will be announcing in coming months and that is the all-new 9-4X SUV. Seen here for the first time in production trim thanks to the premature leak on the carmaker’s Chilean website, the 9-4X is expected to debut at November’s Los Angeles Auto Show before going on sale on both sides of the Atlantic early next year.

The new model is classified as a small-to-midsize SUV, measuring just 4.77m in length, 1.8m across and 1.68m high, and has been styled almost exactly like the previous concept version of the car, revealed back at January’s Detroit Auto Show.

Full details about its equipment and powertrain options are yet to be released, but we do know that base models will come with a 2.0L turbocharged petrol engine developing 245hp (183kW) and 295lb-ft (400Nm) of torque. Drive is sent to all four wheels via a six-speed automatic transmission, and at full tilt the 9-4X will accelerate from 0-100km/h in 6.4 seconds and reach a top speed of 250km/h.

North American versions of the car could feature a 284hp (209kW) petrol V6 engine also mated to a six-speed automatic gearbox. There’s also the possibility that Saab could also offer General Motors’ upcoming 250hp (184kW) and 550Nm (406 lb-ft) of torque V6 turbodiesel.

Safety features include xenon headlights, electric-stability and traction control, driver, passenger and curtain airbags, and 245mm rubber on 17in alloys.

To spread development costs, the platform for the 9-4X will be shared with Cadillac’s next-generation SRX and both vehicles are expected to be manufactured at a plant in Ramos, Mexico.
