Houston Lawyer goes crazy at car auction
December 31st, 1969
Houston lawyer, John O'Quinn, paid $500,000 at last weekend's Kruse International auction, to purchase a yellow 2005 Lamborghini Gallardo that was signed by a number of celebrities. Some of the big names included Regis Philbin, Hugh Hefner, Paula Abdul, Will Ferrell, Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson (pictured) among others. O'Quinn, who made his money from a tobacco lawsuit settlement, now has a fetish for collecting strange cars with even stranger history.
Other purchases at the auction included a 1938 Cadillac 90 Series Town Car previously used by Pope Pius XII for $250,000, a 1941 Packard Super 8 Lebaron limousine that was used to transport FDR and Harry Truman for $290,000 and the pièce de résistance, $350,000 spent on the Batmobile used in the 1995 Batman Forever movie.
Among his collection is a '75 Ford Escort owned previously by John Paul II, which he purchased last year for $690,000.The money paid for the celebrity-signed Gallardo was donated to the Child Safety Network charity.
