Four tonne armored Range Rover
December 31st, 1969
There’s a new toy for the extremely paranoid in the form Prodrive enhanced armoured Range Rover. This beast weighs in excess of four tonnes and is virtually an armoured tank for soccer moms. Panels are upgraded with layers of steel and reinforced windows, which are tough enough to withstand a barrage from all but the biggest guns, but will likely be used to keep the paparazzi away from forgotten celebrities and hated politicians.
At a cost of £165,000, owners would expect a lot more for their hard earned. For this price they’re rewarded with a reinforced floor as well as a private oxygen supply in case the vehicle is attacked by a gas attack or grenade. You may remember our previous post on the bullet proof Bentley. It appears mammoth vehicles like these are growing in popularity.
The hardest part to swallow is the fact that it’s a challenge just getting in to the monstrous ride. Their a bulges of steel along each door and inside it feels more like an encased coffin than a luxury form of commode. The 281hp 4.4-litre V8 can move the thing with surprising briskness, but don’t expect to get any better than 10mpg in mileage.
