New Melkus RS sports car under development
December 31st, 1969
A small auto manufacturer that ceased production back in 1986, Melkus was known for its single seat racing and sport cars built out of Dresden, East Germany. The company’s only road going car, the Melkus RS 1000 was powered by a mid-mounted Wartburg 3-cylinder 2-stroke engine with displacement ranging from 1 to 1.2L and with only 101 ever made.
Now there’s news that the company is planning a comeback with the Melkus RS planned for release in 2008. Further, designers Peter and Sepp Melkus plan to start building prototypes by as early as next year. The new car will follow the tradition of a lightweight vehicle with a small capacity motor, probably a 2L four-cylinder with power ranging from 130 to 200hp. Only 25 of the vehicles are expected for production annually with a price-tag of about €75,000.
