Toyota’s next small cars
December 31st, 1969
The small car market is about to heat up with the introduction of two new models from Toyota. The first is the production version of the Auris concept that was displayed recently at the Paris Motor Show. The official unveiling of the Auris is expected at an engine systems exhibition in Bologna, Italy, on the 5th of December. These latest images suggest that the production version will be almost identical to the concept car.
The latest news is that the Auris (the name has not been confirmed) will not replace the Corolla, but will be sold alongside as a premium small hatch. Coming in both three and five door variants, the Auris will feature several four-cylinder engines ranging from a 1.4L mill up to a 177hp 2.2L unit, with both diesel and petrol options. Supposedly built off a unique platform, the Auris also sits longer than the current Corolla, measuring 4.22m long, 1.76m wide and 1.53m in height. Sales should start in the spring of 2007.
Toyota’s other foray into the small car world will be with a possible new micro car aimed directly at the ForTwo. The car should look very similar to the Endo concept that featured at the 2005 Frankfurt Motor Show, and will hopefully include the unique wraparound windscreen and two-tone paint scheme. Disguised prototypes have already been spotted at Toyota proving grounds in Japan, ahead of a possible launch sometime next year.
