Spy Shots: 4×4 Ferrari 612

December 31st, 1969 We previously reported that Ferrari was working on an "Insertable” 4×4 system that’s designed to send drive through the front wheels during slides and loss of traction. The optional system is expected to debut on the face lifted 612 Scaglietti, which was caught undergoing testing by spy photographers. The strange apparatus seen on the front wheel is used to measure the degree of front wheel slip, which is being used to calibrate a computer controlling system. The new drivetrain can be fitted on both front- and mid-engined vehicles, so we may see the optional system available for Ferrari’s entire lineup. Unlike the constant AWD system found on Lamborghinis, Ferrari’s four-wheel drive will only interfere when the rear wheels lose traction, and owners will still have the option to completely disengage the system.
