Abarth brand revived with the Fiat Grande Punto
December 31st, 1969
The long awaited Grande Punto Abarth will make its debut at the Geneva show alongside its rally-approved version – the Abarth S2000. This will be the first of a new range of sports oriented models from Fiat featuring the famous Scorpion Abarth branding.
The car on show in Geneva is equipped with a 1.4 Turbo petrol engine that delivers 150bhp at 5500 rpm, boosted to 155 bhp by the adoption of 98 RON petrol. What’s more, thanks to a booster kit, a version with twice as much power as the basic version (180bhp) will soon be available. This is a revival of a tradition from the past: for example, the Fiat 500 of 1958 delivered 13bhp at 4000 rpm with a top speed of 85 km/h, while the Fiat 500 Abarth of the same year delivered 26bhp at 5000 rpm and a top speed of 118 km/h. The car will be fitted with a 6-speed gearbox, Brembo brakes, enhanced bodykit, and 215/45 size tyres.
The Abarth S2000 (pictured inset) is fitted with 270hp and 4-wheel drive, and will be used for competing in the International Rally Championship. We only wish Fiat made a production model that was this powerful.
