Lumma Design CLR 500 RS debuts in Geneva
December 31st, 1969
There aren't many people out there that think the regular BMW M5 isn’t fast enough or find its subtle but aggressive styling unsatisfying. Fortunately, there are still tuning companies like Germany’s Lumma Design that cater for those extreme individuals. They take the already potent BMW M5 saloon and increase its performance by adding a full racing exhaust system with a high-flow catalytic converter. Engineers then tweak the ECU and remove the car’s electronic speed limiter, which lifts the standard car’s 507hp output to 560hp, enough to send it to a top speed of 327km/h. The engine bay has also been dressed up with a carbon-fiber air-intake and plenum, and a red cylinder-head cover.
Labeled the CLR 500 RS, the modified saloon made its world debut at the Geneva Motor Show this week. Unique features of the car include a wide body-kit with wheel arch extensions and a rear apron with an integrated racing-diffuser. Completing the visual enhancements is a lightweight trunk lid made of carbon-Kevlar fiber with an embedded rear spoiler lip for improved downforce. All the chrome exterior parts from the standard car have also been replaced with carbon-fiber units. The aggressive look is rounded off with a set of three-piece 21in lightweight alloy wheels and a lowered H&R sport suspension that sits 40mm below the standard car.
The interior is decked out with two-toned leather upholstery, even more carbon-fiber, aluminum racing pedals and a unique Lumma Design steering wheel.
