Preview: 2009 Toyota Land Cruiser
December 31st, 1969
Update: Official images and information on the new Land Cruiser have been released.
Traditional heavy-duty SUVs have fallen out of favor in recent times with buyers heading towards smaller crossover-style soft-roaders in droves. Toyota, the manufacturer of one of the most popular off-road vehicles in the world, is sticking to the same basic formula for its latest Land Cruiser SUV. This means you can expect an affordable full-size SUV with off-road capability and Toyota’s trademark reliability.
These latest renderings reveal that the next-generation Land Cruiser will most likely grow in size and ride on a lower platform. It’s also rumored that Toyota engineers have developed a new air-suspension system for the new Cruiser, which should be able to raise and lower the vehicle automatically depending on driving conditions.
Toyota’s next Land Cruiser has been spotted in prototype form across the globe, with examples seen undergoing hot-weather testing down under and others seen along rocky outcrops in Eastern Europe. It’s expected to make its debut at the Tokyo Motor Show towards the end of the year with sales expected to start by the middle of next year.
New to the Land Cruiser range will be the addition of Toyota’s 5.7L V8 engine sourced from the Tundra pickup, which will also feature in the upcoming Lexus LX 570 SUV. The VVT-I equipped V8 will come with a six-speed automatic and is likely to develop close to 350hp. There could possibly be a smaller 4.5L V8 turbodiesel engine producing 203hp and 317lb-ft. of torque, with 90% of twist starting from just 1,200rpm. I love toyotas...But that is one hella ugly ass SUV. I hope they do a way better job at the next landcruiser. It has always been a nice truck to look at.

By vinnie #4, Posted: 3/28/2007
Good. It looks like someone ripped off the lower half of the new highlander and plopped on the old top of the current cruiser.
Cheers!

This is a pansy suv! I like the solid axle version better. Toyota should sell this version to all the soccer moms and make an off road version with hummer size tires 37in. and two solid axles with selectable lockers! Is that too much to ask Toyota? The old land cruiser earned a reputation of being tough and the ability to drive almost anywhere, now there reputation is that they can't drive off road and they are bad on gas and very expensive $$$. Come on Toyota don't wait til someone else does this! (Oh yea Jeep Rubicon sort of does this.)

well , still its not the land Cruser we have been waiting for all most 7 years , l think Toyota have to revue their design over again and look to other SUV style , like Rang Rover , Cayenne , X5 and do something for people who are looking for good cars likr Toyota as well as design
Thank you

By Albert #23, Posted: 6/8/2007
Since 1999 I own a LC 100 with a 4.2Tdi-Engine, meanwhile with 250.000km without any major repairs, this car displays perfect engineering and quaity, which cannot be found anywhere else. The new Landcruiser, called "200" will get the same shape as the recently presented Lexus 570, just the front and tail lights might be different and propably the list of luxoury installations might be shorter. Toyota never used a different body for the same sized Lexus and Landcruisers. The shown image seems to be a fake, the body siluette is different from the LX570 and the door elements are similar to the current LC 100.
However, at the Tokyo Motorshow in fall I wll see my next vehicle face to face, letīs hope, that the japanese did a similar perfect work. .... and, no, I will not sell my old LC, why? it carried me for 250.000km safely and free of trouble around Europe...

If this is the new Land Cruiser , then it's a problem , the old looks batter and I think Toyota should review the shape again .

Mustafa,
Is it really the 2009 Landcrusier? I think that the Jappanies will not reveal the real one now...I think the picture at the top of this page is a fake!
I am waiting for the new one too. I have 1996 that is work very good for alomst 260K Km and I am planning to keep it for the tough off-road rides.
Regards

Well, I think that could TOYOTA engineering could come to us with better prototype, but hey its TOYOTA Land Cruiser. I had Cayenne Turbo 2004 that I bought it new for $105 K & I sold after 2 years for $ 75K. My brother had Lexus LX 470 (2000 model) that he bought new for $ 70K and he sold it in 2005 for $ 35K. You do the math and you figure out how much this piece of metal holding its resale value. It is like a bond or stock that never lose its value. Since that, I will never consider anything but Lexus LX or eqivalent from TOYOTA. Guys, if you don't like TOYOTA, don't comment about TOYOTA!!!!!
By Francesca #39, Posted: 9/13/2007
i think this is a nice suv, the color should be black but at least it looks better than most american junkies this days on the road.
