F1 to move to V6 engines in 2011?

December 31st, 1969 If Max Mosley, president of the FIA, gets his way, Formula One will switch to V6 engines in 2011. The 2.2 litre turbo-charged formula, with powerplants limited to just 10,000 rpm and running on biofuel, was set out by the FIA president in a letter to manufacturers, according to the magazine F1 Racing. The radical proposal, to make F1 technology more cost-efficient, road relevant and environmentally friendly, will also involve single engines being used for a minimum of five grands prix, compared with the current two. Also proposed for the 2011-2014 regulations are four-wheel drive, power-boost buttons and "severely constrained" aerodynamics, such as the limitation of wind tunnel use, and the document was also sent to Volkswagen and Ford, who may enter F1 in the future. "We understand that such an approach has broad support from the competing manufacturers," Mosley said. (GMM)

  1. What the...

They should make it 2 litre engines so that the Super 2000 engines out of the WTCC cars can be used. NOT!

I just don't get the point of all the new rules, since it didn't make the races more interesting to watch so far. :(

  2. I found the first 3 races quite interesting. And the championship itself has never been more interesting with a rookie leading the points tally. The big problem is overtaking at the front end. It's still too easy for someone in pole to win the race and that's what needs to be changed, in my opinion.

  3. why is F1 trying to let everyone play on the same field.... there is a reason the Special Olympics differs from the regular Olympics.

  4. And in 2015 we will have 1.4L engines to run F1! Just ridiculous...

  5. the whole POINT of F1 is that it's something extraordinary!! Why on earth would anyone want to make it more road-relevant or environmentally friendly?! Companies as it is spend resources on road car development, including making them environmentally friendly. F1 is supposed to set the benchmark in terms of performance and skill, not help make my Honda Civic produce less carbon emissions and get better mileage! Max Mosley is going to ruin F1 and everything it stands for!!

  6. i hope max knows what he is doing.

I think he is doing this just to make it budget friendly to smaller teams

my advice is: if you are not rich enough don't race in F1.

  7. 4x4 for F1????

  8. '4×4 for F1????'

    My thoughts exactly.

  9. Why the hell does he want to encourage smaller teams into F1? There were about 5-6 teams aswell as Prodrive who were all bidding for the extra team slot next season. F1 is supposed to be the most extravagant form of motor racing, and the pioneer of technology, not some crappy kit-car contest!

  10. max mosley is a bloody f****** bullshit rubbish. f1 cars have got to be real wheel drive, and the point of watching f1 is because of how exotic are the cars, not to see silly road cars on the track, it is to see cars at 372.6 kph on monzaĦ

  11. i can remember qually engines, tyres and ground efects since then the,ve lost the plot.i feel sorry for the youngsters you,ll be whatching 1200cc f1 soon.
