Spy Shots: Fiat’s Abarth Punto and 500 hot-hatches

Spy photographers have spotted the upcoming Abarth versions of the Fiat Punto and 500 minicar, the first of a range of sports oriented models from Fiat featuring the famous Scorpion Abarth branding. Previewed in concept form at the Geneva Motor Show in March, the new Punto Abarth that’s due to be unveiled at either September’s Frankfurt show or October’s Tokyo event will feature the same 150hp 1.4L petrol turbo engine as the concept car, mated to a six-speed gearbox and driving 215mm rubber.

A more powerful version sporting a 200hp powerplant could also be in development, with both cars expected to get a wider track, blacked out grille and headlights and a full sports bodykit.

As for the 500 Abarth, we’re unlikely to see this hot-hatch until next year. When it arrives, it will likely feature the same 150hp 1.4L turbo engine as the Punto version and will also get upgrades to its handling pack to allow it to compete with BMW’s brilliant Mini. Like the Punto, the 500 Abarth will also sport a complete bodykit with large intakes in the front bumper to feed air to the turbo engine and keep things cool. The 500 Abarth is also being considering for launch in the US, where it could be sold as an Alfa Romeo when that brand relaunches Stateside in coming years. More images after the jump.
