December 31st, 1969 Less than a week after the announcement that Formula One would not be returning to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for the ’08 season, track president Joie Chitwood has announced that the event will be replaced next year by Moto-GP. With this latest US circuit on board, Moto-GP’s calendar will now have 18 events scheduled for next year with the Indy race taking place on September 14th. The track’s road course will be modified in July next year to accommodate the racing motorbikes, and will include the addition of a four-turn stretch inside the oval's first turn, which will transform the circuit into a 16-turn, 2.6mile motorbike course. This is the first time motorbikes will be racing at the Speedway since 1909, two years before the introduction of the Indianapolis 500.
