December 31st, 1969 Racing enthusiast and avid car collector Steve McQueen’s 1963 Ferrari Berlinetta Lusso has sold at auction for $US2.31 million, smashing the estimated sales price by more than a million dollars. The car was bought by an anonymous buyer over the phone at the Monterey Jet Center auction, which drew in over 800 people. The seller, Mike Regalia, bought the car almost a decade ago and has since restored it to pristine condition. When asked how much he paid for it, Regalia told AP reporters "a new Lexus would cost more than what I paid.” The Ferrari was originally given to McQueen as a present from his first wife Neile Adams. It was optioned with Lusso brown metallic paint and a beige leather interior that was personally picked by McQueen.
