Holden shows off new VE Ute

GM Holden has unveiled the new ute version of its VE Commodore, the regular sedan with a flat-bed replacing the rear doors. This is the first all-new Holden Ute since 2000’s VU edition and it’s the most spacious and powerful utility from the Aussie GM subsidiary yet. Developers spent an additional AUD$105 million designing the Ute on top of the $1 billion spent on the VE Commodore sedan program.

Before you write this car off as just an oddity of the Australian market, remember that this is the vehicle that could be sold in other markets including the US as a Chevrolet El Camino.

The new Ute model comes with all the same engine options as its sedan cousin, which means a 255hp (190kW) 3.6L V6 in base models and an optional 362hp (270kW) 6.0L V8 for more performance. The flagship SS V gets 19in wheels, dual zone climate control, Bluetooth phone connectivity, alloy pedals and a premium audio system and quad exhaust pipes. Transmission options include four, five and six-speed autos or a six-speed manual shifter.
