Opel prepping twin-turbo AWD flagship
December 31st, 1969
Opel’s replacement for the Vectra sedan is still close to a year away but already we have some important clues about the new car including details about a new flagship version. That’s right. Opel will launch a new high-performance version complete with a twin-turbocharged AWD powertrain.
The new model will be available in sedan, hatch and estate bodystyles and there are rumors a new coupe version based on the GTC concept (pictured) will eventually be launched as a successor to the Calibra. The cars will also be sold in the U.S. as the next-generation Saturn Aura, although final styling is expected to be changed slightly to suit American tastes.
Mechanicals are based on GM’s FWD Epsilon 2 platform so expect more space and a stiffer chassis than the compared to the current model. New to the lineup will be an electronic controlled AWD set-up and limited-slip differential. Power will come from a 300hp twin-turbocharged 2.8L V6 petrol engine mated to a six-speed manual.
The performance flagship will likely be called the VXR, reports AutoExpress, and it will have a unique sports bodykit, V-shaped grille and blacked out xenon headlights. It will ride on 19in alloys and a lowered suspension kit as well.
