Acura designers stuck on new look for NSX

December 31st, 1969 Nissan’s recently launched GT-R has been met with much acclaim and Lexus’ upcoming LF-A supercar is showing great promise, so now the pressure is on Honda and its Acura division to wow the automotive world with a new version of the legendary NSX supercar. Acura previewed one possible design at last year’s Detroit Auto Show with the Advanced Sports Car Concept, but the design was quickly dropped due to the unfavourable response given by the public. Time is ticking and Acura’s designers are working hard on penning a new design, the only problem is they can’t come up with anything. "All of the designers are working together on the NSX, but they can't agree on the styling," Dick Colliver, executive vice president of American Honda Motor Co., revealed to Automotive News at the recent Detroit Auto Show. Designers know the final styling is critical if the NSX is expected to compete with the aforementioned rivals but arriving at something substantial is proving to be extremely difficult for the California-based design time, Colliver explained. The only information Colliver would confirm is that the car will be powered by a ten-cylinder engine. He also said the new NSX is scheduled to arrive before a redesigned RL sedan and that model is set to make its entry sometime in 2010.

    wait; they expect to have this car in show rooms in 2 years? and theyre still penning the skin? look, i know toyota and honda have gotten the lead time down considerably on a new model, but 2 years for a halo car is rediculous. they have to have something in mind already. a general shape at least cause theres no way you can go from paper to show room in 24 months.

    well, on the 1 hand: it shows that they are committed to making something worthy of the NSX name.

    On the other, these delays do not look promising as other brands keep passing Acura by.

    Well, at least they ditched the Advanced Sports Concept because that thing was hideous.

    well its kinda hard to pen something that doesnt look like a ferrari/lambo/spyker/etc etc etc

    the original nsx, the back end looks great, from end, eh, so if they can do a modern day revision that would be cool but as for somethign wa out there in terms of a new design, i can see why they cant get anything going.

    Acura.....what am I to think of this brand. They make very reliable cars - thats it. Back when the Legend and NSX were in the stable they were indeed tops. They dropped the ball and never recovered. From the failed RL to not having a solid design done for a car that drops in 24 months - what is going on inside Honda. They spend hundreds of millions on R & D and can't get a solid design out? Hint....scan the online blogs...visit colleges, high schools - go where car enthusiast work and play. Talk to top auto writers about their ideal sports car..talk to race car drivers.....take opinion polls....THEN take all the info back to your shop and blend that with your advanced race car knowledge and gather some young designers with fresh ideas. Then duplicate this for each of your car lines....try it. The original NSX was BEAUTIFUL - the concepts I've seen for its replacement are not - back to the drawing board Acura.

    didn't see anything wrong with the original nsx succesor concept, the honda hsc...that was pretty mean looking machine worthy of a nsx name imho...didn't like the rear window lines though but if they could refine it a bit it would look stunning....maybe it looked too much like the nsx from the front, but that can't be bad, can it. Still way better looking than the ASC concept.

    It's the internal geometry and parts consideration that take time. The shell is much less difficult to design.
