HGP builds 640HP Bi-Turbo Golf R36
December 31st, 1969
If you were disappointed by VW’s decision not to shoehorn its potent 3.6L V6 into the Golf then you'll be glad to hear German company HGP has gone ahead and done it. However, not content with the 300hp output of the naturally aspirated mill, the tuner has added a pair of turbochargers and boosted power to a supercar-rivaling 640hp (477kW). That’s as much power as VW’s own Golf GTI W12 650 concept car, which relied on a 6.0L W12 engine for its numbers.
The car is based on the AWD R32, already a strong performer thanks to its torquey 3.2L engine, but with 640hp available from the uprated biturbo 3.6L unit this model takes performance to another level. Testing of HDA’s previous Bi-Turbo Golf R36, which only had 600hp, saw the car reach a top speed of 202mph (327km/h) and accelerate to 174mph (280km/h) in an amazing 23.5 seconds at Nardo’s high speed test track last year. The 0-62mph (100km/h) dash took a brief 3.8 seconds but we suspect the latest 640hp version will be able to shave a few tenths of that mark.
If you don’t find hatchbacks particularly appealing, HGP also offers its kit for the Passat sedan and Touareg SUV as well.

Without a ton of computer help I don't see how it could possibly put that power down.

HOLY CRAAAAAAPPPPPP ! ! ! ! !
That's insane, I was expecting in the mid 300hp range but over 600 is just incredible. This thing is AWD right?, because I don't see how else it would work out.

Putting down the power is now problem with the all wheel drive system. I once drove as passenger in a Seat Leon 2.8l Bi-Turbo with around 580 hp. Fast as hell in a straight line.

Where does it say AWD?
It just doesn't have the wheelbase or the wieght for that kind of power. Maybe it uses spiked tires? :)

HGP used the 3.6-litre V6 from Touareg and Q7 to start with just as they did with the Nardo High-Speed version.
It is AWD and they do run the 6-speed DSG.
It will run you roughly 114,400 euros in the end!

"Fast as hell in a straight line"
Does that really mean anything? If a car can't take corners properly it isn't worth making. I never understood the hype about muscle cars that go very fast in a straight line and then fly off the road when it turns. Muscle cars are cool and all but how useless is a car that can't even handle properly.

skyline, this thing will corner just as well as anything you've driven.. the point is you cant give it 100% into a turn cause ull lose it.. but 100% in this thing is 3x what you're used to. muscle cars are the same way.. theyre made for accelerating on a budget. they still handle very well.. much better than a FWD of a similar nature.. the problem is theyre easy to lose control of cause you have SO much power available... the same would be the case here. this car would no doubt take turns better than an STi or EVO cause you have more power available to distribute to the wheels (lets just assume they have as good of an AWD system as the two cars mentioned).
tuners have been reworking EVOs and STis for years.. getting them up to 700 bhp and more... and the same thing happens every time. more power gives you more options. you can go into a turn faster, you can take it harder, and you can spin the wheels more... if you want. more power will always result in faster cars, provided that the driver is taking the turns on limit and not surpassing. THATS the key. muscle cars are hard to control if your turning fast and giving it hell. but in a straight line, uve got lots of power behind the center of mass.
I'm interested in Top Gear getting this thing cause JC had a blast in the LP640 golf,... but i believe his point was that it was too heavy and it needed AWD......
sounds like some one was listening.
but i'm concerned about how heavy that front end is... whats the weight distribution? its probably 60/40 at best, which just wouldnt cut it.
gus, ofcourse it would need a lot of computer power, but im sure they have sorted it all out.

I don't doubt that this thing can handle. Even muscle cars can handle good if you know how to handle them but they're outdated suspensions make it harder. I know that's just to keep the price down and most American's care more about price than other things but I'd rather save up more money for a car that has a more advanced suspension.

right, true enough... and thats what this is... its ideally a really advanced drivetrain in a really small car. more power, more traction, less weight. its the perfect trifecta. but when people say a car can't corner.. well a car like this wouldnt be able to "corner" cause you cant possibly make this car handle at its peak performance like the standard car would... cause your in a league of your own at that point.
so yea.. lets joke about how stupid it is to put this much power into a small car like that but realize that with respect.. this car would probably outperform a lambo or ferrari... simply because its so much smaller than either of those cars... with just as much power.

I would like to know how they got that DSG to handle that power because, VW originally was reluctant to give the transmission more power. It would break if it had more than 300Hp. Alot of owners were told that we could not do mods to get more horse Over 300Hp, because of that issue.
