
VW Group CEO Martin Winterkorn made the comments when referring to a new 300hp (225kW) V6 turbodiesel mill
Enlarge PhotoSpeaking with Auto Motor und Sport this week, Volkswagen Group boss, Martin Winterkorn, said: “With Bentley we will react to the changing market conditions. I could well imagine a six-cylinder twin-turbocharged diesel in a Bentley.” The engine Winterkorn was referring to is a newly developed 3.0L twin-turbocharged V6 unit with around 300hp (225kW) and 440lb-ft (595Nm) of torque. If given the green light, the new mill would likely appear in the next-generation Arnage saloon due in 2010.
Bentley marketing director Adrian Hallmark has previously commented that a diesel engine is perfectly suited to the marque as its customers enjoy the low rev and high torque nature of its vehicles, attributes diesels are ideal for.
However, both these comments are in stark contrast to a recent statement made by Bentley boss Franz-Josef Paefgen, who said that there were no plans for a diesel model.
Arch rival Rolls Royce was also rumored to be investigating the potential of a diesel model. Its parent, BMW, was developing a new twin-turbo V8 diesel, however CEO Norbert Reithofer later revealed that the carmaker was planning to end production of any future V8 diesels and focus on six-cylinder engines instead.

Meet the top commenters on the LeaderboardI could see the hot V12 unit used in the Euro market (and hopefully USDM) Q7 and the R8 concept (which could see production, I understand) to be used in a Bentley, but a V6 Diesel, even twin-turbo, in a Bentley is poor! It's lowly, especially in an Arnarge, which is supposed to move even further upmarket, I don't see that at all.
There is no true confirmation of a Diesel in a Bentley at this point, anyway, but I could see that V12 unit in it's engine-bay.l
Who the hell buys a V6 Bentley? If I were spending that much money on a car it had better have AT LEAST a V8 but preferably a V10 or V12. There's no way I'd even consider a V6 in a car this high market. I'd walk out and right into the nearest Rolls-Royce dealer.
V6? Why, when they have a perfectly good diesel V10 in their inventory all ready to go.
Plus all they need to do is pull their already Le Mans winning race cars out of retirement refit them with V10 diesels that already exist and voila!! Bentley just went and got itself some race history virtually over night to help build their brand.
