December 31st, 1969 Volkswagen surprised many in the automotive field when it rolled out a new supercar concept at the 2001 Tokyo Motor Show. VW, after all, was a brand synonymous with selling budget hatchbacks and frugal runabouts but then at the Tokyo event motoring press were presented with the 600hp W12 Nardo concept. Weighing in at just 1,200kg and developing more than 600hp, the Nardo was capable of accelerating to 62mph from rest in just 3.5 seconds and could reach a top speed of 217mph.
