Consumer Reports lists its 'Top Picks' for 2008

December 31st, 1969 Influential magazine Consumer Reports has come out with this year’s ‘Top Picks’ comparo, picking the best cars from ten different categories in a field that included over 260 vehicles. For the first time ever, a South Korean manufacturer has been included as a top pick - Hyundai has not just one car, but two cars in two different categories. Another new entrant to the awards, the Lexus LS460L was the highest scoring car in the history of the awards garnering a near perfect 99 out of 100. The awards are done by category as follows: * Green Car - Toyota Prius Chosen for its unbeaten 44mpg in a 5-seat hybrid sedan as well as its reliability. * Small Sedan - Hyundai Elantra SE Chosen for its overall package of quality and features, and lots of safety systems, for a relatively low price. * Family Sedan - Honda Accord Again, its overall package of smooth ride, refined interior and exterior and roominess saw this car edge out its competitors. * Upscale Sedan - Infiniti G35 (pictured) A pleasing combination of sportiness and luxury, with smooth powertrains and agile handling, as well as the choice of AWD. * Luxury Sedan - Lexus LS 460L The highest rating car to ever be tested by Consumer Reports, scored well in every category. * Fun to Drive - Mazda MX-5 Miata Cheap top-down thrills and a superb chassis saw this car score as high as the Porsche Boxster but at half the price. * Small SUV - Toyota RAV4 Comfortable, roomy and an enthusiastic engine as well as good fuel economy. * Midsized SUV - Hyundai Santa Fe A quiet and expansive interior, good build quality, a refined powertrain, a relatively good ride, and ESC as standard. * Minivan - Toyota Sienna Only minivan with AWD, as well as a quiet interior and comfortable ride. * Pickup Truck - Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Crew Cab A good compromise between practicality and comfort with a good payload rating and impressive comfort for a pickup truck.

  1. The fact that the Lexus came in at almost 100 shows these ratings have little value. The LS460L is the hybrid version of the LS400 and it costs $18K more than the regular gas version but it only gets 2-3MPG better. It just shows how dumb the average auto consumer is to want to pay so much more just to make themselves feel better about buying a hybrid when in fact is is just as bad for the environment. More money than CENTS :-)

  2. craig; what concerns me more is the "minivan" category. thats a little old of a term now. seems like a way to give toyota a free award. sure the sienna is the only minivan with AWD.. but thats cause GM doesnt make minivans any more. they make 7 passenger crossovers. same with ford. oh,.. and those DO have AWD... and look better too.

the other thing is... SILVERADO? you HAVE to be kidding me? ford sells 3 or 4 F150's for every silverado, and I believe Toyota overtook them with the tundra this past year. I know the tundra has had some fairly embarrassing recalls (such as some cam shaft problems with the 5.7L engine, and the 6 speed trannies are apparently horrible), but........ SILVERADO?

  3. "sure the sienna is the only minivan with AWD.. but thats cause GM doesnt make minivans any more"

True, but why doesn't GM make minivans anymore? Oh ya, because they were flying off Japanese lots but no one would take a second look at GM's vans. Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Kia, Chrysler, they all make minivans and make good money doing it. Crossovers can't be put in the same category, they need their own new category for rating.

About the Silverado, sure Ford sells more F-150's but that doesn't mean anything as far as quality goes. Just take almost everything that Chrysler made in the past decade, crappy shit that sold by the boat loads but you never saw them winning these kinds of awards. And the Tundra could never have won this, they had too many problems. It's not really a surprise considering it's Toyota's first attempt at that segment but flaws are flaws, you can't win awards with them.

  4. Interesting to read this after reading the "Worst Cars" list. The Japanese and Koreans dominate the Top, and Americans dominate the Worst.

    Sad really.
