Saab 9-X BioHybrid concept revealed
December 31st, 1969
Saab has finally taken the wraps off its new 9-X BioHybrid concept car ahead of its official reveal later today at the Geneva Motor Show. The new car is a preview of a new entry-level model from Saab that’s likely to go into production early next year as the new 9-1. The concept also demonstrates the potential for ultra-efficient power from a 200hp (147kW), 1.4-liter BioPower turbo engine backed by GM's next-generation hybrid system. The engine also has a low emissions rating of just 105g of CO2 per km.
Taking many of its cues from the original Aero X concept, the new 9-X BioHybrid features the same iconic 'turbine' wheels placed at all four corners, minimal bodywork overhangs and extended roof line styling that has featured on many of Saab’s previous concepts.
The new powertrain features a 1.4L BioPower engine mated to an electric motor/generator and a six-speed manual with an automated clutch and sequential gear selection. Drive is sent to the front wheels only. To further save fuel, regenerative braking is employed to top up the lithium ion batteries and the engine also features stop-start technology. The claimed performance numbers for the car include a 7.9 second acceleration time for the 0-100km/h dash and a top speed of 192km/h. Fuel consumption for the combined cycle is an impressively low 4.9L/100km (48mpg), and the engine can accept both E85 biofuel or regular petrol.
Inside, there’s space for four and a unique driver-focused instrument panel that sweeps out from the top of the door molding, arching across the driver. Saab has co-operated with SonyEricsson in providing seamless in-car connectivity for a range of nomadic devices, including a wireless interface for streaming data, entertainment and satellite navigation functions for display and use. At the rear, the cargo deck features an electrically-powered slide-out floor, which is activated when the bottom half of the split tailgate drops down to the floor. For easy loading and unloading, aluminum bars automatically rise up and down as the tailgate is opened and closed.Saab 9X BioHybrid Concept
