Virgin Atlantic and GM offer fuel-cell limo service

Virgin Atlantic and GM have announced today a new partnership to launch a hydrogen fuel-cell limo service for international passengers in the Los Angeles area, with plans to launch similar services in other cities in the new future. The vehicles GM has provided are zero-emissions Chevrolet Equinox hydrogen fuel-cell crossovers, which are being used as part of the GM’s real world testing of hydrogen technology.

Speaking at the launch of the new service, Virgin Atlantic President Sir Richard Branson said “our mission to be the sustainable airline is clear, both on the ground and in the air.” You may recall Virgin Atlantic was also became the first airline to use biofuel to power one its aircraft last month.

Both GM and Virgin hope such initiatives will help spur governments worldwide to assist businesses by building hydrogen filling stations in key cities, and help promote the-roll out of hydrogen powered cars. If the project proves successful, Virgin and GM aim to launch a similar service in New York later this year.
