Video: Ed Welburn talks about the new Camaro SS

December 31st, 1969 As chief of GM's design department and an inveterate Camaro lover, Ed Welburn is a great source of information and opinion on the upcoming Camaro. In this pair of interviews, he gives us an insider's view of the car as it stands now, and as he thinks it'll play out when it finally hits the streets. Although we don't get any specifics, an SS version of the new Camaro is mentioned in passing. Welburn also focuses on the V6 version, noting its efficiency while still remaining sporty. A fairly thorough comparison to the 1969 Camaro - the inspiration for the new model - also gives some insight into what the design team was thinking and aiming at with for the new version. Thanks to Tim for the tip!

  1. Mr. Welburn, kudos for the flow consistency of the final layout. the updated paneling, its sharp sleek and balanced between wheels and body, I can see a very bright future for this current generation Camaro, both in high performance, and every day coastline efficiency. I can wait to sit in one for that better-than-concept- interior!

  2. There was a good reason why the name Camaro died. I guess these guys didn't get the memo. This car will be a failure and deservedly so.

  3. The Camaro is too late to the show. I don't think it's going to do well in the current market, and I don't think the market is ever going to improve enough to make this car a hit. Maybe they should've gone for a scaled down version with a turbocharged engine.

  4. I still like it. A lot.
