VW debuts new 'Park Assist Vision' on CC

Volkswagen used this week’s Hanover Fair to demonstrate its new 'Park Assist Vision' self-parking system on its new CC saloon. The system is still in testing but it’s a hint of what’s to come in VW’s future lineup. Having already launched a semi-automatic park-steering system, the ‘Park Assist’, in its Touran, Tiguan, Passat and Passat estate to help drivers parallel park, VW’s latest system is capable of automatically perpendicular parking.

The demonstration involved a driver in the new CC pulling up alongside a row of parked cars, and then allowing the car to reverse park itself into an available space automatically. The only thing the driver needs to do is select an available space on the monitor of the navigation system, set the gearstick into park and then step out of the car and push a button on the key fob.

Two cameras located in the left and right exterior mirrors are responsible for gauging the dimensions of the parking space. The video signals are transmitted to a 2GHz processor which then analyses them and sends commands to the steering and drive systems.

Two additional cameras at the front and rear of the vehicle as well as the system’s ultrasound sensors monitor the operation and will stop the vehicle if necessary. The driver may also interrupt the maneuver at any time using the remote control.
