December 31st, 1969 Mazda’s new Mazdaspeed (MPS) range offer performance levels comparable with much more expensive cars and has quickly become the bang for your buck standard in many segments. Now the range is set to expand with two new models in works – performance versions of the recently revealed Mazda6 sedan and award-winning Mazda2 hatch. Last December images of a Japanese-spec Mazdaspeed concept based on the new Mazda6 were leaked, revealing a lower a sleeker looking body, aggressive ten-spoke 18in alloys and huge intake vents under the headlights. AutoExpress is now reporting that the concept is destined for production and will retain the aggressive look of the concept. Power will come from a turbocharged version of the new 2.5L four-cylinder engine with final output lying around the 280hp mark. AWD will come as standard as well as a stiffened and lowered suspension kit and upgraded brakes. A new concept version will be unveiled at the Paris Motor Show in October ahead of the production version’s launch slated for early 2010. This time ‘round, Mazdaspeed versions of the entire lineup include the sedan and hatch will be available as well as rumored coupe and cabrio models. A year before the new hot ‘6 appears, Mazda is tipped to release a Mazdaspeed version of the new Mazda2 hatch. Few details are known about the car but expect to see a turbocharged four-cylinder with around 170hp on tap. There’s no word if the new U.S-spec Mazda6, revealed last week, will also sport the high-performance variant.     and mazda speed 6 keeps getting the shaft. why not give it the 400 hp 3.5L ecoboost? it's already going to come with the 3.5L.. and the engine is going into the MKS, and probably the f150 and mustang...

    why offer the speed3 and speed6 with the same engine? this second gen speed6 is going to have marginally more hp and probably weigh more too. so whats the point?

    although that smaller engine in front is going to be great for the handling.. but where is the bar and why wasnt it raised?

    with the new CAFE regulations coming, Mazda"s first priority for North America is to being the regular Mazda2 over...it just seems so logical

    The new Mazda6 will get the 3.7 V6 when it launches. Since the Mazda6 for North America and the Mazda6 the rest of the world are getting are on two totally different platforms, it is unlikely that we will see this version of the Mazdaspeed MPS6. The turbo DI 2.5 engine is making almost identical power to the NA 3.7 already offered in the US. So it would be a redundant model. I wouldnt count on anything but the 2.5 and 3.7 sedan for the US.

    mwow; that engine is still required in north american vehicles (namely it is the only engine in the cx7), so theres no reason why the car itself wont be here.

    soupie; i think the best way to push little cars is to show the public that you can still spend lots of money on a really nice little car. selling a speed 2 here is the only way that I will buy one. if they dont offer the speed 2, then i'd never consider it over the fiesta. the mazda2 looks great but that fiesta.. wow.

    gamper; don't knwo where your info is coming from but they're both running on the same platform. the american version is about 2 inches longer in the wheel base and interior than the international version. but the mechanicals stay the same. AWD availability, and as you said, 2.5 and 3.7L engines. the 3.7L is around the same HP figures as the TT2.5, which is why i was making the comment that the 6 is going to be no better than the speed3. but as always, it should have AWD. and the lighter engine should make for a more fun car.

    that 3.7L isnt going to be available internationally, so the speed6 makes sense in other markets, but as I've said, if you're going to ecoboost that 3.7L (or 3.5L, same engine) for lincoln, why not cram that into the speed6?
