Toyota Camry to overtake Ford F-150 as U.S. top seller
December 31st, 1969
The shift away from fuel heavy SUV and pickups is taking its toll on even America’s top selling Ford F-150 and Chevrolet Silverado, with dealers groups revealing the Toyota Camry – the nation’s best-selling passenger car – is poised to take the number one overall spot if the current situation continues.
For the month of April, the Camry overtook the Chevrolet Silverado to move into second place for the first time in a year and is edging closer to the Ford F-150. According to a newsletter from the AIADA dealer group, the Camry has been the top selling passenger car in the U.S. for ten out of the past 11 years but until recently the gap between it and the F-150 and Silverado was so wide that no one predicted the pickups could be knocked from their perch.
Both Ford and GM are from accepting defeat. Yesterday we reported that Ford was set to introduce a smaller and more fuel-efficient pickup based on the F-150, while GM is conducting a new research study on the future of SUVs and pickups and plans to introduce more car-like crossovers to retain its former SUV customers.

Duh.
Camry is an excellent car. Perfect size for the US. Why people buy the Lexus ES instead I don't get...

the lexus is superior and worth the extra money...
By chris #3, Posted: 5/19/2008
bc, the lexus ES isn't anything but more chrome and wood interior. that's like saying the milan is superior to the fusion. they're the same car. just with a different name and sold in a different dealership.
I don't think it's so much the fact that its such a great vehicle, its just the fact that everyone who never needed a truck in the first place has stopped buying trucks. simple as that. if you're not going to buy a pickup.. you're going to get a large sedan. the people who can't take the large sedan market are moving down to mid sized sedans.
what really surprises me is that there is a sales increase in mid-sized cars to begin with. you'd think that the truck sales would decline.. and the same number of people moving from trucks and SUV's to large and medium cars would be the same number of people moving from big cars to small cars. I dunno... thats just my crazy logic talking again.
ignore me, I'm canadian, where the best selling vehicle 10 years running is the civic. and gas costs $1.20/L (about $5/gallon if you're keeping track).

The Civic is the best selling car? Canadians must be smaller than Americans then?
By bambam #5, Posted: 5/20/2008
it was just the timing of the release,
with fuel concerns everyone wants a toytota Prius but
if you can't afford the price tag, might as well go for the
Camry, after all its in the same car lot or dealer.
yeah I prefer the civic, but somehow this is seen as a younger
persons car.

I am sure Ford will offer crazy incentives to keep the top spot.
That said, I wonder if they could offer a cheaper more fuel efficient 4 cylinder variant for those who only want to buy things @ Lowes & Home Depot ...

Gus i agree with you, ES is essentially just a rebadged Camry, at least IS, GS, LS all have RWD to differentiate themselves from mainstream toyota.
Camry as number 1 is nothing surprising as more people want to save money by buying a more fuel efficient car. It's a similar story in Australia, where Holden Commodore a big sedan with big V6 and V8 engines being the best selling car for last 10 years i think, but this year it's likely that Corolla will overtake it as number 1 selling car here. Actually here in Australia Toyota has about 5 places amongst the 10 best selling car. With Corolla, Hilux (pick up), Camry, Aurion (V6 Camry) and Yaris all in top 10

MWOW: I think it's because the civic has been made in canada for about 20 years now... its a dependable, cheap car. gas here in canada is 5$ a gallon, and in the last 30 or something years, the cheapest it's ever been was $2 a gallon, for like one weekend.
Bam; I think with everyone who's used to driving the big vehicles downsizing, the only midsized car that anyone knows well is the camry and accord. and the camry is cheaper. The same americans that are getting out of their SUV's and trucks today are the same americans that stopped buying midsized american cars in the 90's cause gas all of a sudden wasnt that expensive and trucks got decent mileage. they don't want to go back to american cars cause they remember how crappy their american cars were in the 80's.
gojira; I don't see ford offering much incentive on the F150. Ford's been looking more towards strong quality sales instead of high numbers. They've already reduced production in dearborn to match what they perceive the demand is, and something tells me the production numbers will fit. and from the sounds of things, ford's already conceded the top spot.

omg omfg omg omfg ..
First of all I would like to say . I like japanese ppl and Japanese schoolgirls are ultra hot but!!!!
STOP BUYING IMPORT CARS YOU STUPID AMERICANS. well unless your buying like a 335i or C350 or G35 . The ones the sell the most are cars around 20k so therefore you should be buying AMERCIAN CARS because our Economy is AWFULL ATM ..
Ford Fusion-
Chevy malibu
Mazda 6
Saturn aura . are all reliable if not more than imports specialy when it comes to transmissions and none of that " My timing belt broke and it messed up my valves and head"
People buy Toyotas because its reliability myths. They are reliable but the New generation of Amercian cars are superv. Anyone remember the Chevy Prizm? eventhough it was identical to the Corola it had beter aceleration and reliability Acording to JdPower reliability reports. So there.

i think that ford is going to make other strong , confortable , thuoghness and better trucks and cars than the camry and other toyota fuckking trucks
