Hybrid Technologies builds 220mpg supercar for Automotive X-Prize

December 31st, 1969 The Automotive X-Prize has already spawned some pretty interesting entries, from both aesthetic and technical perspectives. The car revealed today by Hybrid Technologies fits the bill no matter how you look at it. Expected to achieve over 220mpg with supercar performance, the best part of the design is that it's intended to be made in volume, not just as a one-off. Two versions of the car are planned, one powered by a standard petrol engine and lithium-ion-based hybrid powertrain, the other a pure electric. The hybrid option will be the Automotive X-Prize entry, and is expected to achieve 220mpg while producing 'wild' horsepower, reports Popular Mechanics. The all-electric car will target a range of 150mi to 180mi per charge. This isn't the first car the North Carolina-based firm has produced. Last year saw the development of an electric roadster, a converted all-electric Mini Cooper, their own electric sports car, the L1X-75, and an electric motorcycle. The L1X-75, with a full carbon fiber body, managed a very respectable 100mi range with a top speed of 120mph, figures that put it in a league with Tesla's perpetually delayed Roadster. Though it may not be as refined as the Tesla, it certainly shows that Hybrid Technologies has the capability to build serious hybrid systems. A driveable prototype of the as-yet unnamed hybrid supercar is expected by the end of September. Via: PopularMechanicsHybrid Technologies 220mpg supercar Automotive X-Prize entry

  1. What's that? A quick cool electric car with FOUR times the range of the Volt? Sounds a bit like the Impact...

  2. I'm finding this hard to believe, But I'll wait to see the end product.
it almost as good as Toyota's Volta Concept but the Toyota was a
    very early idea.

  3. I'll line up for it once its done.

  4. i'll believe it when I see it.

  5. 220mpg..WAO..looks like the 55-60mpg for the Prius...Most likely, that figure may be either an estimate or another "lab"result: dyno, constant room temperature, no air resistance, no wind, etc. etc. Anyway, I would be very happy to drivie a car that could make half of 220mpg! It is good to see that there is light at the end of the tunnel and, like before, we will be able to drive our cars on an interstate withouth considering gas expenses in the high hundreds or thousands dollars...The model shown looks better than the Tesla and the Fisker to me, but it could be just a drawing i.e. it may change looks substantially if it finally goes into production. Finally a 220mpg car should send a clear message to those in the car manufacturing business that are still thinking of V8-engine cars for the middle class family when gas prices are aiming at $5/gal

  6. almost too good to be true but no reason why the cant pull it off.

  7. if something is too good to be true....it probably is

  8. The mpg they intend to hit with that kind of bhp is questionable...
We'll see how this one turns out...

  9. I'd like to see an efficient car that is powered by 3 things:
    1. Electric motors with batteries.
    2. Small gasoline engine to keep the batteries charged when they run down to a certain point.
    3. Photo-voltaics embeded on the roof of the car to add a good trickle charge while parked in the sun.
I'm ready to buy this one... .

  10. Hey GM,Ford,Crystler, Here is your chance, get in contact with who ever developed this car and hire him, and pay him well.

  11. When they start producing cars that surpass 220 MPG and everyone has one in their garge, gas prices will hit $25.00 a gallon. The gasoline producing corporations will always play the shortage card to justify there price asjustments.

  12. jvazquez8 do you mean it will go to $2.50 a gallon from $25.00 a gallon when the Saudis get scared and then desperate?
