Preview: 2010 BMW M5 saloon
December 31st, 1969
Next year will see the launch of two critical models for German labels BMW and Mercedes-Benz, with both the next-generation 5-series and E-Class sedans plus their different variants expected to be released over the next 12 months. Mercedes-Benz will be first to the table with the launch of its new E-Class and subsequent E63 due at next year’s Geneva Motor Show, however later that same year BMW will unveil its next-generation 5-series.
The car will likely debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in the second half of the year and could be joined by the high-performance M5 as well. This latest rendering gives us an early look at a possible design for the new car, revealing that will likely adopt influences from the current M3 but will also feature a pronounced grille and a smoother overall shape than the current model.
A V10 engine will return but could be enhanced with a pair of turbochargers and an extra 500cc in displacement. Expect to see power levels up around the 550 to 580hp mark to bring it into line with Audi’s recently revealed RS6. The likely transmission will be BMW’s new M-DCT dual-clutch system, as found in the M3.
Performance will also be improved thanks to the extensive use of lightweight materials including carbon-fiber and aluminum. The car’s construction will be a hybrid of an aluminum spaceframe for the front section, and a traditional steel monocoque for the passenger compartment and rear. This will ensure a favorable front-to-rear weight distribution and improved handling. Up front will be an independent suspension with MacPherson struts, with a multi-link layout for the rear. Expect to see an unpainted carbon roof and more of the lightweight material possibly used for the boot and fender panels.

I LOVE THIS CAR :X:X:X
By chris #2, Posted: 6/2/2008
hey.. my car has a macpherson in the front and a multi link suspension in the rear... but it has one quarter of that power. and it's a ford.
yeah thats looking really nice.. i wont lie. I like the new 3 series, especially the M3 coupe.. just gorgeous,.. and if the 5 series looks anything like it, it is sure to be a winner.
the only problem is audi. I just saw the new A5 yesterday and I almost crashed my car looking at it. now THAT is a stunning car. more stunning than this render, and you're nearly guaranteed that the render will be nicer than the actual car.

It's interesting how BMW always seems to wait for Mercedes-Benz to introduce their new car before releasing their own new model.

I think this car looks absolutely cool...and since its a m5 you know its going to be blast to drive....but I just noticed that most of the renders look very similar to the cs concept and the 3 series coupe.....
By chris #5, Posted: 6/2/2008
well, in all fairness, it will come out a couple months afterwards.. far too little time to make any changes to the car if that is what you're implying. lead time in the auto industry is 2 years at least.
Ally; that's the idea. the car is going to look very similar to the 3 series.. just bigger. and the CS concept is supposed to be the one car that every BMW from now on looks like. expect to see a lot more of the CS making its way through.

Chris..im wiith you..The new Audi S5 looks amazing. It doesnt need anything to make it look better. The standard fatter tyres and flared arches make it look niiiiice. And the sound of that V8 !

very pretty but not awe-inspiringly beautiful. my jaw isn't dropped. it needs something to seal the deal

Whatre u guys dumb -- its not an official rendering -- its from 'schulte' design -- its just a Prediction. Sometimes I wonder if anyone out there knows anything at all.
To whoever said BMW waits for AMG to come out with models -- that statement is almost as dumb as you comparing an AMG to an M. BMW's M division came out with modified cars a good bit before AMG, in the 70's, while AMG's started coming out in the 80's -- I mean what the hell do you have to do to find some decent car people around here???
