Jaguar XK turns 60
December 31st, 1969
Jaguar will this weekend be celebrating 60 years of the iconic XK nameplate as a collection of models from the 1950s to present day take to the hill at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. Some of the classic models that will feature at the festival include the brand new XKR-S, two XK 120s, the historic 'NUB' (pictured) and 'LWK' models and an XK 140.
The new XKR-S, which was first revealed back in March, features a series of weight saving modifications and engine upgrades over the standard XKR on which it’s based. This ensures that it’s the fastest production XK to date, with a 0-60mph time of just 4.9 seconds.
The record-breaking XK 120 'Montlhéry' Fixed Head Coupe is one of the three 1950s XK's that will take part in the Goodwood festival’s classic car challenge. This car is famous for its part in the 'Seven Days and Seven Nights' event where it was driven by Stirling Moss, Bert Hadley, Jack Fairman and Leslie Johnson. It averaged 100.31mph (161.43km/h) for seven days and nights covering 16,851 miles.
It will be joined by 'NUB 120,' which was raced by Sir William Lyons' daughter, Patricia Appleyard, and her husband Ian during the 1950s. The third classic XK to feature at the festival will be a privately owned XK 140 – a private entry at the Le Mans 24-hour race in 1956 by Robbie Walshaw and Peter Bolton.
Also joining the lineup will be the long-nose D-type Le Mans winner from 1957.
