MTM Audi RS6: when 580HP is not enough
December 31st, 1969
Updated with new images.
MTM is not known for its restraint - it is, after all, the same company that fitted two engines into an Audi TT to set a speed record at Nardo. Its engineers have now taken the tuner’s brand of high-power, no-holds-barred modification to the internal workings of the new Audi RS6 Avant, already one of the most powerful production cars on the planet, and managing to boost output to even more extreme highs.
The Audi RS6 comes from the factory with 580hp (432kW) and catapults from 0-100km/h in less than 5 seconds. MTM was dissatisfied with this figure and so decided to offer an upgrade package that lifts power to 702hp (523kW) - around 50hp (37kW) more than a Ferrari Enzo. Torque has also been lifted to a final figure of 579lb-ft (785Nm), brought about by increased boost pressure and less restrictive exhaust systems.
With the added power on board, the MTM Audi RS6 is now capable of reaching speeds in excess of 300km/h and accelerating from 0-100km/h in just over four seconds. MTM engineers predict the top speed could go even higher with the addition of new aerodynamic modifications but for now only a carbon diffuser has been fitted to the car.
Prices for the upgrade packages start at around €4,000 ($6,290), although for about €1,000 ($1,572) MTM will remove the car’s electronic limiter. In standard form, the RS6 will reach about 280km/h.

the ultimate soccer mom vehicle. Still like it though, the M5 killer.

i gotta disagree with you brad. i think this RS6 is hideously ugly and the M5 (excluding the hatchback) is a pretty cool car. i'd take an m5 over this any day of the year

You may take the m5 james, but the rs6 like mentioned above does kill the m5, and the current 5 series is not a nice looking vehicle.

Let's hope this was the last salvo on the stupid horsepower wars.
Gorgeous car though....

Stupid horsepower wars? What? How can you not love this? Yes, I would love manufacturers to focus more on lightweight, but there's never anything wrong with more power, especially when you have AWD to put it down effectively.

what's an M5? is it that blurr that comes up rather in a hurry on the passenger side window when I drive an RS6? A true wagon cruiser rocket has AWD... anything else is a wannabe.

It's a matter of opinion Layne. But even a car fan like me (and I'm not alone) feels that 580bhp in a family station wagon is ludicrous. I've never driven one but I'm willing to bet there's no noticeable difference between the old 450bhp powerplant and this one.
The only reason for this many ponies in this car is bragging rights. And since I have no doubt BMW or MB can do the same then it's a stupid horsepower war.
I'm sure tunners can make the M5 and Mercedes have the same power but don't both won't be able to put all the power down like the Audi because of it's all wheel drive system.
The more power you feed the cars the harder it will be to put all that power down with street tires. This is where advantage goes to the AWD system (Quattro).
If you guys think 702Hp is too much then you must not be a real car guy. Poser =).
