5-Series sedan joins BMW's armored Security division

BMW has added another model to its armored ‘Security’ division with the announcement today of the all-new 5-series Security. The latest saloon comes just a month after the reveal of the X5 Security SUV, and is available in both 550i and 530i specification. While both models are heavily laden with state-of-the-art security technology, they still provide the sporty dynamics and comfort expected from the popular executive saloon.

Like the previous X5 Security, the new 5-series model is rated at VR4 ballistic protection level. This means that it can resist attacks with impact weapons as well as hand weapons and handguns up to the calibre of a 44 Magnum. In addition to the stipulated VR4 firing angles of 90 and 45 degrees, the tests include other firing angles in order to make them more realistic.

Key elements in its construction are heavy-duty material and ballistics-resistant steel, plus 22mm-thick bullet-proof safety glass all around. Other safety features include an intercom system, a camera monitoring set-up, underbody explosive protection, and lightweight but sturdy Aramid fiber mats (the same material used for bulletproof police vests).

The 550i Security is powered by a 367hp (270kW) 4.8L V8 and reaches a speed of 100km/h from standing in just 6.5 seconds. The corresponding acceleration rate of the 272hp (200kW) 530i Security is 7.5 seconds.

All Security models are built completely in-house at BMW and are available directly through the carmaker’s dealerships. The vehicles are targeted primarily at buyers concerned about carjacking and kidnapping, especially in parts of Latin America, South-East Asia, Africa and the Middle-East.
