The 2011 Honda CR-V has in recent years become less of a pint-size SUV and more of a minivan alternative—though it keeps its economical operation and carlike handling.
It's in a hotly contested class, though, with plenty of alternatives—some of which might be a better choice, depending on your priorities.
The Chevrolet Equinox was completely redesigned for 2010, gaining a more fuel-efficient standard four-cylinder engine and greatly improved interior, and it's now a strong alternative.
So is the Toyota RAV4, which has a plush ride and feels like a larger vehicle (it is, with three-row capability available).
The Subaru Forester feels a bit sportier than the rest, it comes with standard all-wheel drive, and after its most recent redesign it’s more spacious and comfortable.
Both the Kia Sportage and Hyundai Tucson have gone from also-rans to real contenders over the past year; thanks especially to spruced-up interiors and a more refined feel, they're comfortable alternatives, even if they're not as roomy as the CR-V.
