Chevy Nova 350 Heats up Sitting in Traffic?

By Yahoo:Simon at Yahoo!Answers.com

I have a 74 Chevy Nova with a brand new 350 with MSD Ignition, Edelbrock Intake, Headman Headers, and everything else is stock. After I put it in and driving around and sitting at traffic lights it starts to head up. It gets up to 230 and that worries me in this... Read More

  • I trust temp sending units being placed in the cylinder head much more than I do when placed in the intake manifold. Your base timing should be bumped up to around 12 as a baseline to begin from. Spark plug reading will tell you where the engine likes the total timing... Read More
  • Switch to a 195 degree thermostat. In your hot climate the water isn't staying in the radiator long enough to cool down! The thermostat just sets minimum operating temperature,I bet this will fix your heating problem. Reference:Old car guy
  • you might try getting a couple electric fans, set one to constantly run and set the other one to run if it start getting hot
  • Is it a solid 'flex' fan or a stock 'thermal clutch' fan? Is it an automatic transmission, or a manual? Has it the factory A.C. condensor unit in place? The stock '74 'vette had the best factory supplied cooling systems for the 350ci-t350 combo. It came stock with a... Read More
  • You are lucky. It seems you need a heavy duty radiator and you should be able to get one which was for a big block or even an olds or pontiac engine to cool your small block. If I was short on funds I would first change out that fan. Flex fans do not really work well... Read More

Why should I also consider these?

The base Avenger lags far behind much of the competition because of its combination of a sorely unrefined base four-cylinder engine and interior appointments that look and feel downright cheap.

In comparison, the new Chevy Malibu's four-cylinder is much more refined and quiet, as is the Altima's.

The Sonata and Optima offer a more comfortable, hushed ride and nice interiors that feel better, even if they aren't as exciting to look at as the Avenger's.

Compared to the 2009 Dodge Avenger, the Ford Fusion feels especially sporty and nimble, and though its interior also has a basic design, the materials are better.

Roominess is one area where the Avenger does pretty well; its backseat feels capacious and has enough headroom for adults, while the backseats in several of these vehicles—especially the Altima—can be tight.

At the six-cylinder level, the Avenger R/T brings a lot of features and a sporty feel for about the same money as more sedately equipped V-6 rival models.

2009 Chevrolet Malibu
The 2009 Chevrolet Malibu is a top contender in its class in almost every way.

2009 Ford Fusion
The 2009 Ford Fusion is a great choice for those who place their priorities on style and handling, but if interior space matters to you, look elsewhere.

2009 Hyundai Sonata
TheCarConnection.com still rates the Honda Accord as the family-sedan champion, but the 2009 Hyundai Sonata lands solidly in the upstart tier that includes the Mazda6, Ford Fusion and Chevrolet Malibu.

2008 Kia Optima
The 2008 Kia Optima doesn't perform as well as other mid-size sedans, but its roomy package and generous features make it a strong practical choice.

2008 Nissan Altima
The 2008 Nissan Altima is a little sportier, though not less sensible.
