Opel’s tenth generation hatch is scheduled to make its official debut at next year’s Frankfurt Motor Show but the carmaker has released several teaser images in the meantime to keep the suspense going. Showing the profile of the new car, the teaser shots confirm that Opel’s designers have taken inspiration from the larger Insignia.
Also shared with new Insignia are several innovative technologies, such as Opel’s Front Camera system, designed to read oncoming speed signs and act as a lane departure warning system. The car also gets adaptive front lights, with up to nine different settings for brightness.
The flowing lines of the exterior and sculpted look will continue into the interior, which will be dominated by a wrap-around line that links the instrument panel to the door. There will be seating for five adults, and the rear seats will feature a split fold setting to boost interior space.
The new Astra is a crucial model for General Motors as this is the car that will be sold eventually in North America as the next-generation Saturn Astra and in Australia as a Holden. The car will also need to recover market share lost by the current model to Ford’s strong-selling Focus hatch and even the upcoming Fiesta compact.
It is based around GM’s Delta FWD compact platform and will once again be available in coupe, three and five-door hatchbacks and wagon, and possibly a sedan. Since the Delta platform is shared with the Chevrolet Cruze, which will be built at GM’s Lordstown Ohio plant, there’s the possibility that the new Saturn Astra could also be manufactured in North America to keep costs low, however, there’s yet to be any official confirmation.

It would be better to make the Astra in America so exchange rates do not kill it oh and market it better.
