Update: Japanese firms developing carbon-fiber for mass production

Posted on Thursday 31 July 2008

carbon_weave_main05.jpg

Carbon-fiber is seen by many in the auto industry as one of the most effective ways of reducing vehicle weight and improving fuel economy and emissions levels, but the relative expense of the material means that it’s still reserved for only a handful of high-end production cars. BMW has effectively used carbon-fiber roofs for its M cars to help lower their center of gravity, and Nissan and General Motors have used the composite material to help save weight for the GT-R and ZR1 supercars.

U.S. Senate Democrats support $6 billion industry loan package

Posted on Wednesday 30 July 2008

US_Senate_logo_main_200.jpg

Following the call by Michigan members of congress for the government to support a multi-billion dollar aid package for the auto industry, Senate Democrats have approved a $6 billion package to secure low-interest loans for the Detroit Three.

The package will be financed by Congress for $900 million, in order to guarantee the $6 billion in loans, and Congress may consider further stimulus packages later this year.

If the entire $25 billion package were to be approved it would cost Congress a total of $3.75 billion - which will provide $25 billion in loan guarantees for auto makers who are retooling plants in order to respond to strict new government CAFE standards and changing consumer demand.

In addition to the $6 billion loan guarantee package, Senate Democrats have also agreed to put up $300 million in funding for research into an advanced battery.

Update: GM will stay in lease business through August

Posted on Wednesday 30 July 2008

GMACFS_logo_200.jpg

Updated: General Motors announced today that it would stay in the leasing business through August at the least. The obvious implication is that the company, via its GMAC finance corporation, is considering getting out of the leasing business, much as Chrysler has done.

Ford’s choice to simply revalue the residuals in its leases effectively takes it out of the market as well, with the price rising enough to make buying a preferable alternative.

In addition to remaining in the lease business, GM will also continue to offer cash incentives, competitive interest rates and a variety of lease terms for ‘most’ 2008 and 2009 models, reports The Detroit News.
